Prologue

Hanamaru: Good morning, zura.

Chika: Morning, Hanamaru!

You: Dia, Ruby, and Yoshiko should be here soon. Mari and Kanan are already waiting for us at Awashima.

Riko: Ooh, I’m starting to get nervous.

Chika: It’s okay, Riko. Remember, this isn’t the actual performance.

Riko: I-I know, but… This is the first time in my life I’ve ever done something like this. Staying calm is easier said than done!

Hanamaru: I haven’t been able to stop fidgeting this whole time, zura. But how can I? I mean, we’re… We’re…

You: I know, right? It’s unreal. We’re actually going… To be on TV!

Chika: Hey, did you all see the news last night? Where they had school idols introducing their hometowns for the special report?

Kanan: Oh, I do remember seeing something like that in the listings. I was more interested in the animal show that was on a different channel, though…

Ruby: I-I saw it! Some of the current best-selling groups were on!

Yoshiko: She’s been so stirred up since this morning, even I know the whole segment by heart. And I didn’t even see it!

Hanamaru: I wish I could’ve seen the last part, where they presented a song along with the mayor, zura.

Riko: I guess when you’re popular enough, school idols get to be on TV as well as in magazines.

You: I hope someday we get asked to perform on TV a lot. Like on music programs and stuff!

Chika: That’d be so cool. I’d totally say yes!

Mari: Then let’s do it!

Chika: Ack!

Dia: Mari! How many times must I tell you to open the door quietly?!

You: Mari! Dia!

Riko: This has definitely happened before.

Kanan: I know you said you’d be late because of your chairwoman duties, but that took a long time. Everything okay?

Mari: *Laugh* Listen to this, ladies. We’ve just landed a big business deal. The TV station wants Aqours to go on the air!

Chika: T…V? TV?! As in t-television?!

Dia: They’re planing to promote Awashima on a local program, and they asked Aqours to be a part of it.

Dia: I went ahead and accepted the offer. Is everyone okay with this?

Chika: Totally okay! This is unreal! Aqours is going to have our TV debut!

You: Miraculous news, reported with miraculous timing!

Mari: We should tour Awashima again to make sure we know about all it has to offer before the shoot. Shall we all go to Awashima Marine Park tomorrow?

Together: Yeah!

Story 1: Wharf

Chika: We were just talking about how we wanted to be on TV, and now we’ve been asked to do just that. Speak of the devil, right?

Hanamaru: That’s not quite what that saying means, but…

Yoshiko: That flawless timing can only mean one thing. We’re being watched. It may be God, the angels, or something else entirely!

Ruby: W-We’re being watched?!

You: For once, Yoshiko might be right. God may have heard us all wishing strongly to be on TV someday.

Riko: It was so timely it seems like it couldn’t be a coincidence…

Dia: Oh, come now. I’m sure the wheels were set in motion well before you all started talking about it.

Chika: We’ve arrived at Awashima!

Dia: Watch your step when you get off the boat, everyone.

Yoshiko: Demons live at the bottom of the sea. They take the forms of fish to lure in humans. If one gets ahold of your foot, you’ll be dragged down to their domain!

Ruby: Huh?! N-No way… I don’t wanna be dragged down! How could something so scary live in the Uchiura sea?

Dia: Ruby, you need to learn how to let these jokes roll off your back.

You: It’s always so fun riding the boat out to the island. Oh! Going to the aquarium by boat is a great selling point, right?

Chika: Maybe so! It’s totally different feeling than a train or bus. I’ll make a mental note of that.

Yoshiko: Why stop at the aquarium? You could say that about Awashima Island itself.

Chika: Oh, you’re right. Okay, then. We’ll put that down as a plus for the island instead of that aquarium.

Yoshiko: I think you should make an actual note, not just a mental one.

Riko: Awashima Marine Park… I wonder what it’s like.

Hanamaru: Huh? Riko, is this your first time visiting the Awashima aquarium?

Riko: Yes. I’ve been to the island itself a bunch of times with Kanan and Mari, but never the aquarium.

You: Come to think of it, isn’t this the first time Aqours has come to Awashima Marine Park as a group?

Ruby: You’re right. It’s so close, but I think this is the first time we’ve all come together!

Chika: This is an important day to remember, then! The first time Aqours visited Awashima Marine Park. Let’s make the most of it!

Dia: Don’t get so engrossed in playing that you forget why we’re here!

Chika: Yes, ma’am. We’ve gotta find lots of great selling points to talk about on TV!

Riko: That’s right… we’re going to be on TV. *Sigh* All my jitters are coming back!

Ruby: Wh-What if I trip and break one of the tanks?

Hanamaru: I think you’d end up with a big bump rather than break an aquarium tank, zura…

Yoshiko: Pathetic! Riko, Ruby, you are little demons. No matter what the situation, I expect you to steel yourselves and deal with whatever comes!

Dia: That’s quite enough! No more of this silliness. Kanan and Mari are waiting for us, so let’s move.

Story 2: Diving Shop

Mari: I can’t wait to go through the aquarium together! Everyone should be here any minute, right?

Kanan: Yeah! Of course, we’re not here to play.

Mari: Oh, don’t be such a wet blanket. Let’s enjoy ourselves! Take it easy.

Kanan: I know, I know. A TV debut is important enough as it is, but to think we’re gonna be talking about Awashima…

Mari: You wanted something more?

Kanan: Oh, no! But since I was born and raised here, actually talking about all the things I like about the area is kind of embarrassing…

Mari: Where’s this coming from? This is your chance to show the world the true hidden power of a native daughter!

Mari: If we nail this appearance, we might be able to get gigs on more well-known TV shows.

Mari: Then Aqours’s name recognition will skyrocket, and more people will learn about Uchiura! I bet after this, Awashima will see more people visiting, too.

Mari: We can’t mess this opportunity up! We’ve gotta make Awashima look like a million bucks!

Kanan: Mari… you’re right. I want people to know more about this island. There’s a beauty to these blue seas and green trees that you can’t find elsewhere.

Kanan: Being embarrassed about promoting my local area would make me unqualified to even call myself a school idol!

Mari: That’s the spirit, Kanan! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the selling points along with you. The more people that come here, the more business for our hotels!

Kanan: The truth comes out… but I guess I’m no different. If more people know about the diving spots around here, my family’s shop will benefit.

Mari: We can show the viewers local secrets, like how to control the fish by moving your fingers over the tank, and how to get half off your bill at the cafe.

Kanan: Neither of those is real! We can’t just say random stuff without anything to back it up!

Chika: Kanan! Mari!

You: Hello!

Mari: Hi, everyone!

Kanan: It’s about time. You hadn’t said anything since you since you got off the boat. We were about to go get you.

Dia: It took a while to get everyone to settle down.

Kanan: Settle down? What happened this time?

Riko: I-I’m sorry…

Ruby: Eep.

Hanamaru: Riko’s never been to Awashima Marine Park.

Kanan: Oh, I see. Well, it’s a small aquarium, but it’s a great place nonetheless. I hope you like it!

Riko: Yup! I can’t wait to see it.

Mari: Now that the gang’s all here, it’s time to charge in at full speed! Let’s go! Let’s do this thing!

Chika: Heck yeah! Go, go!

Story 3: Road to Awajima Shrine

Chika: Wait, everyone! Why don’t we go to Awashima Shrine before the aquarium?

Riko: A shrine?

Chika: Yeah. We can pray for the TV segment to go well, and for Awashima to become more popular.

You: That’s a nice thought. Maybe the gods will lend us their aid to help bring more visitors to the shrine!

Riko: I feel like the gods wouldn’t be that self-serving…

Yoshiko: Oh, sure they would. Piety is what gives the gods their strength. I see Yohane is needed once again. I’ll negotiate for their aid on our behalf!

Kanan: I think a normal visit will suffice.

Hanamaru: I’m worried we’ll end up incurring their wrath, zura.

Yoshiko: You don’t need to go that far!

Ruby: The goddess of Awashima Shrine is Benzaiten, right?

Hanamaru: Yes. Technically, it’s a goddess called Ichikishimahime, but she’s often treated as the same goddess as Benzaiten, zura.

Dia: In fact, this shrine is often worshipped as “Awashima Benzaiten.” People pray for safety at sea, good fish catches, and prosperous and profitable business.

Mari: Profits, huh? Gotta love the Japanese gods. They’re so generous!

Ruby: Is that really related to Japan?

Chika: I guess we’d be praying for prosperity? As in, lots and lots of people visiting?

You: I think so? We lucked out. If it were a god of safe driving or safe birth, we’d be praying for something outside their domain.

Kanan: Then let’s head for the shrine up at the top. We’ll make it count for part of today’s exercise!

Chika: Huh? Can’t we take a day off for once?

Kanan: One day off is one day’s worth of stamina lost. Besides, remember why we’re here. We don’t have the luxury of a leisurely stroll to the top.

Mari: Let’s race and see who can get there first!

Dia: Safety first! It’s not smooth ground, so keep to a reasonable pace and make sure no one hurts themselves!

Chika: I’m off!

You: Me too!

Dia: H-Hey, you all! Keep to a reasonable pace!

Hanamaru: *Huff* *Huff*

Yoshiko: Zuramaru… You’re really… Keeping up…

Hanamaru: Heh, heh, heh. I don’t get wiped out right away like I used to, zura!

Ruby: Awesome! This is proof you’ve gotten fitter! I’ve gotta keep up my exercise, too!

Yoshiko: Yohane… Lose to… Zuramaru?! *Gasp* *Wheeze*

Hanamaru: Yoshiko, you look like an actual demon right now, zura.

Story 4: Penguin Pool

Riko: Oh! Look at the penguins swimming in this tank!

Chika: I usually lose about 15 minutes at this penguin pool whenever I come here.

Hanamaru: Look at how fluidly they swim, zura. They look like they’re having lots of fun!

Ruby: I wanna be able to swim like them someday…

You: You should do special training to become a penguin, Ruby!

Ruby: N-No, I don’t think I actually want to be one!

Chika: Look, look! The little ones up on the ground are sunbathing! How adorable!

Dia: It looks like they’re all lined up. What a funny coincidence that they ended up that way… Or is it? How intriguing.

Kanan: You can feed them, too. Why don’t we do it, since we’re here anyway?

You: Yeah, let’s do it! What time is the feeding?

Kanan: It’s… oh! It’s in a few minutes! Let’s go sign up!

Chika: Aww, the penguins are right in front of me!

Hanamaru: Their waddling is so cute, zura! Look at them flap their little wings!

Riko: I’ve never fed a penguin before. Will they really eat the bait I give them?

You: As long as you don’t act too strangely when you feed them, you should be fine.

Riko: Y-You’re right. I should just hand it to them normally. Here, little penguin! Time to eat! Eek! Did it eat it?! Is it okay? Did it eat?!

You: Riko, you’re freaking out way too much.

Dia: You need to show good manners during mealtimes. Be prim and proper, even when you’re swallowing fish! Is that clear? That’s a good penguin.

You: Wow, Dia’s strictness doesn’t even give penguins a pass.

Chika: And they’re actually listening!

Kanan: It says these here are Humboldt penguins.

Mari: There are other penguins sharing spaces with other animals elsewhere in the park. They’ve got Cape penguins there.

Chika: I definitely wanna stop by there later.

Ruby: Now that I think about it, penguins are birds, right? Would it be more accurate to say they fly in the water, instead of swim?

You: That means sparrows and crows are related to penguins!

Riko: My first thought would be seagulls and black-tailed gulls, because of the connection to the sea.

Yoshiko: They have wings, yet cannot soar across the skies. Their longing for flight is directed at the ocean instead. They traded azure skies for aqua seas.

Yoshiko: Thus, they abandoned their futile longing, yet did not resign themselves to failure. They ennobled themselves in a whole new way! I admire your pluck, penguins!

Hanamaru: You could take a lesson from them about abandoning futile desires, zura.

Yoshiko: What’s that supposed to mean?!

Story 5: Petting Pool

Chika: Let’s go to the second floor!

You: Wait up!

Dia: No running indoors! Goodness gracious… How many times did I tell her we’re not here to play, and she’s still at it.

Mari: Oh, relax. This is a place for leisure, isn’t it? We can’t convey the fun factor if we don’t enjoy ourselves.

Kanan: People would thing we were a bunch of weirdos if we walked around looking all serious.

Riko: Is there anything special on the second floor?

Hanamaru: There’s a hands-on aqua lab. The opportunity to touch real marine life is one of this aquarium’s big attractions, zura.

Riko: Wow. Getting to touch creatures you normally only see behind the glass of a tank sounds like a really special experience.

Chika: Poke poke… How are you today, little starfish?

Chika: Hmm… No response.

You: I can’t even imagine what an agile starfish would look like.

You: Starfish are surprisingly rigid. By the looks of them, you’d think they’d be soft and squishy.

Chika: I know, right? The first time I touched one I expected it to go “boing,” but I was so shocked by how it felt, I shouted, “It’s hard!”

Riko: So this is the touch and feel tank? Starfish, urchins… Is that a sea cucumber? There are all kinds of critters in here!

Chika: Go on and touch them, Riko! Strange new sensory experiences await you!

Riko: S-Strange sensory experiences? Now I’m not so sure. I guess I’ll try the starfish… Here!

You: Well?

Riko: It’s so… hard!

You, Chika: Right?!

Yoshiko: The sea cucumbers feel a lot nicer in your hands than you’d expect, given the way they look. Ruby, grab one.

Ruby: Eeek! N-No thanks, I’m good.

Yoshiko: Seriously, they’re all spongy and stuff. It feels kinda nice.

Ruby: S-Spongy? I… I guess I’ll give it a little…

Ruby: Poke. *Gasp* EEEEEEEEK! It boinged! Ewwwwwwww!

Dia: Mari, Hanamaru, why are you two trying to flip that sea urchin over?

Mari: I’m curious about its insides.

Dia: I-Insides?!

Mari: With sea urchins, sushi and pasta are the first things that come to mind. Either way, it’s so good when it’s fresh out of the shell, full of that salty sea flavor!

Hanamaru: One day I’d love to eat a sushi boat overflowing with sea urchin-stuffed rolls, zura…

Kanan: You can’t see its insides just from its underside, ladies.

Story 6: Shimatarou's Shop

Mari: Moving on! Any leisure facility worth its salt should have a gift shop worth bragging about.

Ruby: Can we talk about what souvenirs we like best on TV?

Chika: Oh, right. We’re here to research the place so we can promote it on TV.

You: So you ended up playing, like normal.

Dia: Somehow, I knew this would happen.

Riko: Is it all right for us just recommend whatever gifts we like best?

Kanan: Let’s check with the clerk afterwards.

Chika: This is a cute pen! If we’re picking favorites, I call this one.

You: Stationery’s always useful, so that’s a good choice. Maybe there’s a notepad that goes with it?

Yoshiko: What about this handkerchief? It’s got the Awashima wave pattern embroidered on it. Anyone who uses this will surely be captured by the spirit of the island.

Hanamaru: I wanna tell the audience about the sweets, zura! You can share your memories of Awashima with family and friends. These cookies look so good, too.

Chika: The plushies all feel so warm and fuzzy! Hugging one’s enough to make you sleepy…

Ruby: I want a plushie, too!

Dia: You have a million at home. Restrain yourself.

Ruby: Aww…

Mari: Restraint is toxic to the soul. Which one do you want?

Ruby: Umm, umm, the dolphin!

Dia: Mari! Don’t spoil her!

Mari: You’re one to talk, Dia…

Riko: It’s like parents and their child…

Chika: Hey, why don’t we all buy one of the same thing? You know, to remember today?

You: Good idea! What should we get? The pen?

Kanan: Nah, we probably all have plenty of pens at home.

Mari: It’s funny you said that. I just cleaned out my desk the other day and I found about 20 pens in there.

Yoshiko: Why’d you have so many?!

Hanamaru: Did you find any treats, zura?

Kanan: Hmm… I think in this case we should get something more permanent, rather than food.

Ruby: Plushies…

Chika: Oh, if we’re doing plushies, what about this one? It’s so big, you could use it as a pillow!

Riko: Don’t forget, we’ll be back here again soon for the show.

Story 7: Blue Cave

You: In the end, we went with keychains.

Mari: It’s a standard choice, but if we put them on our bags, it’ll be like we’re always together, no matter where we go!

Chika: I’m gonna put mine on as soon as I get home.

Kanan: That’s it for our tour of the aquarium. Is there anywhere else we should go?

Chika: Hmm… We’ve still got time, and since we’re already out and about, I’d like to find more places on Awashima to recommend.

Mari: I know! What about Blue Cave?

You: Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Blue Cave!

Riko: Blue Cave? What’s that? Some kind of cool place to visit?

Chika: You’ll see when you get there. C’mon, c’mon!

Riko: Whoa! This is Blue Cave?! It’s gorgeous!

Kanan: It’s a 170 meter-long tunnel completely illuminated from end to end!

Dia: This would make for a beautiful photo.

Riko: Dolphins, penguins… They’ve got all kinds of seas creatures made out of lights. How lovely!

Ruby: The star-shaped one must be a starfish. It’s so dark, it looks like a real star!

Hanamaru: Then you could also say these are dolphin and penguin constellations, zura.

Riko: Aww, what a nice thought. A tunnel of night lit up by constellations of the sea. How romantic!

Chika: It’s not just inside, wither. The exterior’s cool, too! The big door on the semicircular wall, and a big tunnel stretching out all lit up in red and blue!

You: Like a spaceship!

Yoshiko: A tunnel is a type of transfer device that connects two worlds. There’s no guarantee the entrance and exit are in the same dimension.

Yoshiko: If we followed this tunnel to its end, who knows where we’d come out?

Chika: A navy pier, right?

You: Huh? Yoshiko, is this your first time here, too?

Hanamaru: I know what Yoshiko’s saying, zura. A tunnel that connects two different worlds is a setting you see in novels sometimes.

Yoshiko: Huh? Zuramaru’s AGREEING with me? This can only be a harbinger of the apocalypse.

Hanamaru: That’s not nice, zura!

Mari: Given the situation in here, we should really push this place as the spot for a date. Imagine cuddling up, holding hands, sharing an embrace… like so.

Kanan: Don’t grab me like that!

Mari: Boo! Forget mean old Kanan, then. I’ll get lovey-dovey with Ruby over here.

Dia: Who do you think you are? Over here, Ruby! Get behind me!

Ruby: Huh?!

Epilogue

Chika: That was awesome! We went all over Awashima together!

Dia: Fun is all well and good, but did we get a proper list of Awashima’s best features?

Chika: Of course! The aquarium is full of marine life found near Awashima. You can learn all about the ocean without ever having to go underwater!

Riko: And between the feeding experience at the penguin pool and that hands-on aqua lab, you can physically interact with the marine life, too.

Mari: Lots of yummy urchins and sea cucumbers await!

Hanamaru: Pickled sea cucumbers are very tasty, zura!

You: The goddess of Awashima shrine is… Umm… Benzaiten! Safety at sea and prosperity in business! Oh, and the stone stairs are awesome for exercise!

Ruby: The lights at Blue Cave look like real stars. It’s so pretty!

Yoshiko: And when you exit the tunnel, another dimension awaits!

Dia: Your promos aren’t without issue, but… Whatever. It’ll do.

Kanan: We’ll need to take care not to let the actual filming degenerate into a food report.

Chika: *Sigh* All that walking really made me hungry. Let’s go out for a bit before we head home!

Riko: I’m with you. What about… H-Huh? The store’s closed.

Chika: Aww… Ack! Look at the time! The last ferry’s leaving right now!

Dia: What?! Oh, no… If we don’t have a way off the island, we’ll have to spend the whole night here.

You: Hmm… You don’t think we could swim? It’s only about a three minute boat ride.

Ruby: Whaaaaaaaat?! No way! That’s impossible!

Mari: Er… Ahem! Don’t worry, ladies. I’ve got us covered.

Chika: C-Can we really stay the night, Mari?!

Dia: All of us barging in and then staying the night… We’re not making nuisances of ourselves, are we?

Mari: No problem! Don’t sweat it. There’s enough space in my private room for all of us.

Yoshiko: We don’t get our own rooms?

Riko: I think that’s asking a bit much…

Kanan: Plus, you don’t need to include me in the headcount.

You: Forget it, Kanan. It’d be too sad if you were the only one left out! Mari says it’s okay. Right?

Hanamaru: I can’t believe I’m staying in such a luxurious place… I’m in awe, zura.

Ruby: What if I’m too worked up to sleep?

Mari: And since we’re all here, we might as well have a discussion about the TV show. We need to decide what our catchphrases and signature poses should be!

Chika: Oh, that sounds hysterical! Are we gonna shout out our colors and stuff?

Riko: That’d make us power rangers, not school idols! Let’s not take this any further!
