Challenge Festival Round 12 StoryBar

Prologue

Eli: I’m sorry to call you all out when we’re off from school, but I’ve got wonderful news, and I wanted to share it with you all in person!

Umi: Wonderful news? What is it? I’ve got no idea what it could be.

Nozomi: C’mon, think about it. The year’s almost over, right? Soon it’ll be New Year’s Eve, and artists all over will be putting on countdown shows.

Hanayo: Oh! I heard that this year they’re recruiting school idols from all over, and connecting them via streams to do a huge New Year’s live show!

Nico: Yeah, the sheer scale of the event is absolutely massive. Hey, wait a sec. Does that mean the wonderful news is…

Eli: Exactly! µ's is going to be participating in the big joint live show!

Together: Whoa!

Rin: Awesome! Ringing in the new year onstage is gonna be such a blast!

Maki: Kotori? Did you know about this?

Kotori: The truth is, Nozomi told me all about it. I’m so excited to make costumes for the countdown show that I even bought a new sewing machine!

Nozomi: That day you were all helping me at the shrine, Kotori was working hard at her part-time job to save up for a new sewing machine.

Kotori: *Giggle* Yup! Just think, there will be millions of people watching the national countdown show. Isn’t this going to be fun, Umi?

Umi: ………………

Kotori: Huh? What’s wrong, Umi? Are you not excited?

Umi: Oh, no, I’m just speechless. This is such an honor, I’m a bit tense about it.

Eli: Well, no everyone knows. I’d like to talk about our practice schedule next. Oh, hang on. I don’t see Honoka. Is she still not here?

Umi: Oops, I’m sorry. I forgot to tell you that she texted me and said she was going to be a bit late.

Honoka: I’m here! And I’m barely even late! Hey, what did I miss? Everyone looks like they’re totally hyped up for something.

Kotori: Honoka, listen to this! We’re going to be part of the big multi-school idol New Year’s Eve countdown live show!

Honoka: Whoa, really? Yes! Yes! Yes!

Umi: W-Watch it, Honoka! If you throw that box everywhere, you’re going to hurt someone! What’s in it, anyways?

Honoka: Oops, I almost forgot. This is the Homura Bakery’s new dorayaki dessert, made especially for New Year’s! It’s sweet bean jam sandwiched between two pancakes!

Hanayo: Ohh, it smells so good! Are these fresh from the oven?

Honoka: Yup! They got done baking right before I left home, so I helped myself to a few!

Umi: A few! That’s a lot more than a few. You’re not supposed to take the bakery’s products for yourself.

Honoka: It’s fine! My dad said I could bring as many as I wanted. Actually, he said he wants all your opinions after you eat!

Nozomi: In other words, it’s a gift. And in that case, I graciously accept.

Eli: Me too. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, so we should take the chance to eat up and re-energize ourselves!

Maki: I’m sure they’re delicious, but they look like ordinary dorayaki to me. What exactly makes these special?

Honoka: I’m glad you asked! As you’ll soon see, the filling is red and white! The red is sweet red bean jam, and the white is a mix of potato and white miso!

Honoka: And to top it off, it’s branded with a little pig on the top to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

Maki: Wow, that sounds very elaborate. *Chew* Yum! It’s got the perfect amount of sweetness. Very nice!

Hanayo: I agree! You can taste the flavors of both jams. I could eat a whole box of both!

Rin: This little pig brand is so adorable, too. So much that I almost feel bad eating it!

Honoka: I’ve got plenty, so eat as many as you want! Seriously, don’t be shy. Dig in!

Kotori: Y-You don’t have to be so pushy. All right, I’ll try one. Mmm! Yummy!

Honoka: I know, right? Don’t be so modest, Nico. Here!

Nico: I’m still eating my first one! Why’re you trying to rush us?!

Story 1

Umi: ………………..

Honoka: Is everything okay, Umi? You haven’t eaten much. I guess you don’t like them?

Umi: Huh? Oh, no, not at all. Everything your family bakery makes is delicious, and these dorayaki are no exception. They’re great.

Eli: You do seem a bit down, though, Maybe you’re sick? Do you feel okay?

Umi: Yes, I’m fine. I’m sorry. I’ll go splash some water on my face and try to wake up.

Honoka: I’ll go with… Oh, she’s already gone.

Kotori: I can’t believe Umi would only eat four of a Homura special. What do you think is the matter? Maybe she really is sick?

Maki: Four’s a lot! For heaven’s sake, I was full after two. How much does she usually eat? Am I right, everyone?

Hanayo: Well, they’re really, really yummy.

Nozomi: I figure I could put away six and still have room for more.

Maki: You all are the real pigs here! Honoka came with a box full of dorayaki, and there are barely any left!

Rin: I get hungry after exercise!

Nico: We haven’t even started yet! Besides, do you really think you’ll be able to move correctly during practice with your belly stuffed full of food?

Rin: Look who’s talking. You’re on your fifth one, Nico! I’ve been counting!

Nico: I-I… I couldn’t help it! I didn’t get a chance to eat before I came here!

Kotori: I wonder what’s on Umi’s mind. She hasn’t been herself this whole time.

Honoka: I thought it might be because she was hungry. I guess I was wrong.

Umi: I’m back. Is something the matter?

Honoka: Oh, nope. It’s all good. What about you, Umi? Are you feeling all right?

Umi: Yes. I washed my face with some cold water, and I’m wide awake now. I think I was still a bit groggy from waking up early for my morning training.

Eli: I see. Well, we all respect how hard you work, but you shouldn’t run yourself ragged. Take a break and relax once in a while, okay?

Umi: Okay. I’m sorry for worrying everyone.

Honoka: Guess what? I came up with the coolest idea for choreography yesterday. Maybe we can add it to our performance for the live show?

Umi: Choreography? What kind of dance is it?

Honoka: Here, I’ll show you! One, two, three, four! Whew. What’cha think? It’s got a little more style and flair than our usual moves, right?

Eli: Yeah. There are still gaps to be filled in, but with some work, we might be able to get it to work with our current song. Let’s give it a shot!

Rin: I second that! It looks like it could turn into a really fun dance!

Maki: It’s complex enough that just seeing it once isn’t enough to memorize it. Can you do it a few more times so we can all try?

Honoka: Of course! Okay, everyone, follow my lead!

Umi: …………………

Kotori: Umi, you’re sure you’re okay?

Umi: Yes. Go ahead, Honoka.

Honoka: Roger!

Story 2

Umi: *Sigh* A New Year’s Eve countdown live show with everyone, huh?

Honoka: Hey! Umi! Whew. Finally caught you.

Umi: Oh, hello, Honoka. What’s up?

Honoka: That’s my line! What’s with you today? You went home early, all by yourself. Are you upset about something?

Umi: No, I’m not upset at all. Although I guess I can’t help but think that it’s such a shame…

Honoka: What’s a shame?

Umi: I really am excited about the countdown live show. But doing the show means we won’t get to spend New Year’s Eve at your house this year.

Honoka: Huh? Do you really have that much fun celebrating at my place, Umi?

Umi: Well, umm, yes. My family is relatively somber when it comes to ringing in the new year. At your house, I feel so much more relaxed.

Honoka: Oh, I see. I guess we have lots of New Year’s soba and other treats, too! Of course, it’s just the leftovers we couldn’t sell.

Umi: D-Don’t call them leftovers! Everything is always so delicious! Besides, I don’t come by just for the food.

Honoka: Don’t worry, I know. If that’s what’s bothering you, why don’t we go to my house after the show? Actually, let’s go ahead and plan for a slumber party!

Umi: N-No, that’s imposing on you too much.

Honoka: Oh, please. Don’t sweat it! My family would be thrilled to have you over. And the next day, we can go on our first shrine visit of the new year!

Honoka: Come one, don’t make me beg. Sleep over! Please! Pretty, pretty please, sleep over!

Umi: I-Is something the matter?

Honoka: You know why I brought that massive box of dorayaki? Because until it was perfected, I had to do taste test after taste test, and I’m sick of it.

Honoka: Mom and dad are jumping for joy because it’s getting rave reviews. Meanwhile, my room is filled to the ceiling with the leftover failed experiments.

Honoka: They’re not even failures. The flavor was perfect, they just came out misshapen. It turned into way too much of a good thing!

Honoka: With so much left, we’re going to be eating bakery leftovers instead of osechi for the holiday and for days after. I can’t imagine eating so many sweets.

Umi: It sounds like heaven!

Honoka: It’s torture! One or two days would be fine, but over two weeks and it becomes torture. I’ll be seeing dorayaki in my dreams!

Honoka: I’m begging you, Umi. Come eat as much dorayaki as you can stand. You’ll be saving my life. I can’t do it all on my own!

Umi: Well, if the situation is that serious, how can I say no? I’ll be happy to join you.

Honoka: Yes! Together we might just make it out alive. No, there’s still going to be too much. Maybe if we got one more person?

Maki: So that’s what this is all about!

Honoka: Huh?

Nozomi: You two are so silly, trying to keep all that stuff secret. Why didn’t you just tell us?

Nico: More importantly, Honoka, did I hear you right? You’ve been feeding us failed experiments? I think you and I need to have a talk.

Hanayo: Easy, easy. You can’t deny they were delicious.

Kotori: Aww, I’m jealous! Eating a mountain of dorayaki sounds like the best party ever. I want in!

Rin: Me too, me too! I wanna eat all the dorayaki you can give me!

Eli: So we’re in agreement, then? After the live show is over, the afterparty is at Honoka’s!

Honoka: A-Ah, ha, ha. Is that okay, Umi?

Umi: Yes, of course! I don’t care if we spend New Year’s Eve relaxing or partying. Both sound fun to me!

Story 3

Maki: Honoka sure is taking a long time. Is she going to be late again?

Nico: She is such a slacker! We are totally out of time before the countdown live show, and she’s in charge of choreography this time. This is ridiculous!

Nozomi: Calm down, Nico. New Year’s is right around the corner. She might have family stuff to take care of. Oh?

Kotori: It’s Honoka!

Honoka: I’m sorry I’m late, everyone. My parents had to talk to me about something.

Umi: Is something wrong?

Honoka: Yeah. Actually, we all need to talk.

Eli: Your mother’s got a fever, and she can’t work in the bakery?

Honoka: At this time of year we can’t find any part-time help, so it falls to me to run the store.

Hanayo: I guess there’s nothing we can do about that. Your poor mom must have it rough, too.

Rin: What are we gonna do about the countdown live show? We’re supposed to be performing the choreography that you made, Honoka.

Eli: That won’t be a problem. I’ve got the routine down, so you can count on me to make sure the rest of the group gets it right. Still…

Nozomi: The real problem is how Honoka is going to get time to practice. That you’re even telling us must mean you’ll have even less spare time than usual.

Honoka: Yeah. I mean, I really want to go, but at this point, I don’t know.

Umi: For now, we’ll email you the music and video files so that you can practice whenever you find the time.

Honoka: Huh?

Kotori: A-Are you serious, Umi? She just said she’ll barely have any time to practice!

Umi: It doesn’t have to be at school. Honoka should be able to practice the choreography at home. Luckily, she knows the routine better than anyone.

Umi: If she practices while watching a video, she can focus on dancing in sync with us. Even in the worse case, where we go on without rehearsing, we can manage.

Hanayo: I-I guess it could work.

Nico: That’s much easier said than done! Think about what you just said. You’re telling her to go and practice after working all day. It’s too much!

Umi: There’s no µ's without Honoka. That’s my opinion.

Umi: What’s yours, Honoka?

Honoka: Oh, Umi.

Honoka: I promise I’ll make it work somehow! I’ll get the timing perfected so that all nine of us are in perfect harmony!

Honoka: Oops! Time for me to get to work. See you later, everyone! Sorry!

Rin: There she goes. Is this really gonna work?

Maki: Who knows? Honoka was willing to stand up and guarantee us it would. All we can do is have faith in her.

Kotori: Umi…

Umi: Come one, Kotori. We’re starting practice. We’ve got very few days left before the show.

Kotori: R-Right.

Story 4

Eli: Let’s call it a day. Great work, everyone!

Rin: Y-You too…

Hanayo: Even though we’re only doing one song for the countdown live show, I’m more excited to perform than usual.

Nozomi: Uh-huh. And the choreography’s gotten that much more tight since we started. At this rate, we’re gonna be fine for the real deal.

Kotori: I think so, too. This has turned into a really cool dance number. No wonder Honoka had so much confidence in her idea!

Rin: You said it! When I struck that last pose, I felt like I totally nailed it! It’s such a great feeling.

Hanayo: And Maki, you reworked our song to better fit the style of the dance, right? Now the music and the movement are totally unified!

Maki: When I pictured Honoka dancing along with that big smile on her face, I felt like I knew what needed to be changed. The fact that it worked is a coincidence.

Rin: *Giggle* You say that, but I know you were hiding out behind the school building, humming this song and dancing the routine!

Maki: Wha—?! Y-You saw that? Why didn’t you say something?!

Kotori: You looked like you were so deeply focused on the songwriting, we didn’t want to disturb you. Oh, a-anyways, you sounded lovely!

Maki: A-Ahem. Regardless, the music and the choreography are both fine. There’s just one problem left.

Hanayo: How things will change when we add Honoka to the mix, right?

Nico: I’m not sure this is gonna work. Even if she was practicing at home, without joining the group, we run the risk of her bumping into someone and getting hurt.

Umi: I can’t say there’s no risk, but I’m sure Honoka is just as cognizant of that as we are.

Umi: I know Honoka’s exuberant side is what we usually notice the most, but no one cares more about this group, or works harder for it, than her.

Nozomi: Aww! Only a lifelong friend could say that. You know Honoka so well.

Umi: M-Moving on. I’m going to head home and send the video of today’s practice to her. I’ll see you all tomorrow.

Kotori: Umi, wait a second. Shoot, there she goes.

Nico: She could’ve just used the club room computer to send the videos. Why’s she doing it the slow way?

Eli: Maybe she’s got a more concrete way of helping Honoka practice than just emailing a video file. *Chuckle*

Nico: Huh?

Honoka: Thank you, come again! Whew.

Honoka: Dad, can I be done now? Okay, sure. Thanks.

Honoka: All right! Today’s video is here!

Honoka: Everyone’s getting a lot sharper. I need to catch up. No, I need to overtake them!

Honoka: Huh? Come in!

Honoka: Thanks for coming again today. C’mon in!

Story 5

Nico: It’s finally time for the live show. So where the heck is Honoka?!

Kotori: W-Well, I called her house, and her mom said she’d already left. She’s not answering her cell, though.

Hanayo: I hope she’s all right. She’ll make it in time for the show to start, won’t she?

Rin: O-Of course she will! Honoka makes the impossible possible! At least, I think she does.

Eli: This is no time for jokes! At this point, we have to assume that it’ll only be the eight of us, I know it’s the worst-case scenario. What do you think, Umi?

Umi: It’ll be okay.

Umi: Honoka always keeps her word. I know she’ll make it in time!

Maki: She’s always late for practice, but I know what you mean.

Eli: Yes. Remember, Umi’s been working hard to support Honoka this whole time. If Honoka misses this event, she’s in for a lot more than an angry scolding.

Umi: Huh? S-So, you know, then?

Nozomi: Anyone could’ve figured it out after seeing you work like a dog every day.

Nozomi: Full practice at school, plus one-on-one practice afterwards at Honoka’s house. That must’ve been a real grind.

Umi: I did it for Honoka, and for µ's.

Kotori: Ah! There’s Honoka! Hey!

Honoka: Sorry, everyone! Am I on time? Am I safe, or out?!

Umi: Normally you’d be out, but if the performance goes off without a hitch, I’ll overlook it.

Honoka: Okay! This is my original choreography, so you can count on me to hit every move perfectly till the last pose!

Eli: I’m glad to see you’re motivated, but are you sure you can do it? The dancing this time isn’t so easy that one joint practice will be enough.

Honoka: Well…

Kotori: E-Eli, I think we can trust Honoka to… Mmph?!

Nozomi: Shh, Kotori. Let Eli handle this, okay?

Umi: We can do it. I’ve seen Honoka’s dancing with my own two eyes, and I promise she won’t disappoint. Right, Honoka?

Honoka: Yup! Remember, I practiced while watching videos of everyone. By the way, that made me so happy. I could see you all were practicing like I’d be there.

Honoka: You all trusted me to make it here. Even when it was just me and Umi in my room, I felt like we were together, and it cheered me up. So please!

Honoka: Please, let me take the stage with you! I promise I’ll show you that I deserved that trust. I’ll repay you all by putting on a perfect performance!

Eli: *Sigh* Hee hee. Looks like the plan worked a bit too well. No one said anything about keeping you on the sidelines.

Honoka: Eli? Then I can?!

Nico: Unbelievable. Even in the final minutes of the year, you make us sweat. Then again, you wouldn’t be Honoka if you didn’t!

Rin: We all worked our tails off to master your dance, Honoka! We’ve all been looking forward to performing it with you!

Hanayo: Let’s get out there and send off this wonderful year with a true grand finale!

Maki: I put a lot of effort into making our song match the style of your choreography. You’re toast if you waste it! *Chuckle*

Nozomi: Everyone’s got high expectations, Honoka!

Honoka: Thank you, everybody. I promise I’ll meet your expectations. No, I’ll exceed them!

Umi: Come on, Honoka. This is our last performance of the year!

Honoka: Yeah!

Epilogue

Umi: H-Huh? Where am I?

Honoka: Oh! Umi, you’re awake! Good morning. Err, I mean, Happy New Year.

Umi: Happy New Year?

Honoka: Huh? Umi, are you still half-asleep? C’mon, it’s time to get up.

Umi: W-Wait. Why am I here? I remember we performed at the countdown live show, but everything after is a blur.

Honoka: *Laughs* You don’t remember, huh? Once we got back to the dressing room, you totally conked out! I guess that’s what they mean by “slept like a rock!”

Umi: L-Like a rock?!

Honoka: I couldn’t believe it! No matter how loud we yelled, you wouldn’t wake up. You must’ve been exhausted.

Honoka: You pushed yourself so hard for me. Thank you, Umi. Thanks to you, I gave an awesome performance on a huge stage.

Umi: It was a small price to pay. I’m just disappointed that I ran out of energy immediately after. That wasn’t what I wanted at all.

Honoka: Oh, it’s fine. Now we can go on our first shrine visit of the year! It’s still morning, so we can have some breakfast, then head over with everyone.

Umi: That sounds nice. Wait, everyone?

Kotori: Oh, Umi’s awake! Happy New Year!

Nozomi: Geez, you were out cold. You didn’t even stir when we carried you over here. You talked in your sleep a lot, though!

Umi: T-Talked in my sleep? I didn’t say anything weird, did I?

Eli: Not at all. You look absolutely adorable when you’re in a deep sleep. So adorable that I had to take a few pictures. Well, a few dozen.

Umi: Th-Thank goodness. Wait, what?! You took pictures of me while I was asleep? Delete them! Delete them now!

Maki: Wouldn’t you rather have breakfast than yell? They made enough for all of us.

Honoka: Yeah! Let’s nibble on some osechi while we watch the video of last night’s show. I got a recording of it!

Umi: Oh, that’s right. I only had a few of the dorayaki, now that I think about it. Can I have a couple to go with my osechi?

Honoka: Umm, about that. How can I put this?

Hanayo: W-We’re sorry, Umi. After the show, we came back here to Honoka’s house, and, umm…

Rin: We were starving! We ended up eating every last piece of dorayaki.

Umi: A-All of it?! There were boxes and boxes full of dorayaki in Honoka’s room!

Hanayo: As the old saying goes, two heads are better than one. In our case, eight heads were hungrier than two.

Eli: Long story short, Rin, Hanayo, Nozomi, and Nico pretty much gobbled up the entire stock.

Nozomi: Excuse me? You ate your share and then some, Eli.

Eli: W-Well, I hardly had time to eat a thing until after the live show was over.

Umi: Th-This can’t be happening. I’ve been looking forward to those dorayaki this whole time.

Honoka: D-Don’t be sad! I’ll get my dad to bake a fresh batch! This time they’ll be fresh out the oven instead of leftovers. It’ll be a million times tastier!

Eli: *Giggle* There’s never a dull moment when all nine of us get together. I hope the coming year is full of fun times like this.

Nozomi: Me too. Maybe our next big thing should be to take a trip together somewhere?

Kotori: A trip? Like a vacation? Ohh, I’d love that! I’ve got so many places I want to visit. Like a winter wonderland!

Nico: Slow down! You don’t just get to blurt out wherever you want to go. We have to be polite, and sit down with Maki before we decide anything.

Maki: Wait, you’re predicating this on my family having a second home we can use?! That’s so much ruder!

Nico: Aww, they don’t? Oh, well. I guess ever your family doesn’t have homes all over the world.

Maki: H-Hang on. I think they do own a place somewhere that gets snow. I’ll ask my father later.

Kotori: Well, if they do, we should go on a group trip to whatever snowy place it’s at, and stay for a couple of days!

Nico: When did we agree to all that?!
