Event Story: Sweet Potatoes, Fall Leaves, and Memories[]

Companion Match Round 5 StoryBar

Prologue

Eli: Okay, stop, everyone! The choreography’s looking much better. Let’s take a quick break. It’s hot out today, so make sure to hydrate properly.

Rin: Okie-dokie!

Nozomi: Um, Eli?

Eli: Oh, hi, Nozomi. You’re doing great… Hmm?

Nozomi: Eli, can I ask a favor? I’d really appreciate it even if you’d just hear me out.

Eli: What’s going on? You don’t usually ask me for favors, and especially not like that.

Nozomi: Well, it’s almost November, right? So, umm…

Eli: Yes?

Nozomi: The shrine I work at’s having a Shichi-Go-San event for kids turning seven, five, and three, but we don’t have enough people to help set up.

Nozomi: Do you think you could come and pitch in this Sunday? I promise I’ll pay you back! And that’s my favor!

Eli: Oh, is that all? You were acting so serious, I was on pins and needles waiting to hear what you were going to ask.

Nozomi: So? Do you have plans for Sunday already?

Eli: Hmm, no, I don’t think so. You can count on me. I’ll help in any way I can!

Nozomi: Really? Thanks, Eli!

Honoka: Hey, what’re you two talking about?

Eli: I’m going to the shrine to help Nozomi this Sunday. They’re holding a Shichi-Go-San festival and need volunteers.

Honoka: Aww, a Shichi-Go-San? I remember going to them, too. Would it be okay if I came by to see you two?

Nozomi: I wish I could say yes, but the truth is, it’d be even better if you could help out, too.

Nozomi: Not just for the celebration, either. We’re sorely lacking helpers to set up for the end of year events. I’ve got a tasty treat for anyone who helps!

Honoka: I’m in! After all, we do a lot of training on the shrine grounds!

Umi: It’s true that the shrine’s done a lot for us in many ways. This is an excellent chance to return the favor.

Hanayo: So what’s the treat if we help? Is it white rice?!

Nozomi: Heh, heh, heh. That’s a secret until after the work is done!

Nico: H-H-Hey, everyone! What about practice?!

Maki: Besides, we’d be disturbing the shrine if all of us showed up together. I don’t think the entire group should go.

Nozomi: I appreciate the concern, Maki. But the truth is, we need all the hands we can get. Don’t worry about being a bother.

Nozomi: Besides, it’s only for one day! We’ve still got a while before our next live show, so I don’t think this will affect our schedule. What say you, Nico?

Nico: I guess we can spare one day. Then again…

Nozomi: You know, I’d really love to see you in a shrine maiden outfit, Nico. I bet it’d look perfect on you. You’d be s adorable!

Nico: D-Don’t give me those sad puppy dog eyes! Fine, you win. But just one day!

Rin: Maki, we should go help, too! Then we can pay back the shrine for all the times we’ve used it, and get a treat, too! You think it’ll be ramen?

Hanayo: I hope it’s white rice!

Maki: Something tells me you’re both wrong. Anyways, I’m not opposed to helping out. Just as long as we’re not being a nuisance.

Nozomi: *Chuckle* That settles it, then!

Story 1

Umi: Today’s weather was certainly on our side. The temperature’s just perfect.

Honoka: Yup, yup! It’s a perfect day to help out! Let’s do this!

Umi: Kotori said she had something to do that she couldn’t get out of, so we’ll need to do her part, too.

Nico: Perfect day, my foot! What’s the meaning of this?

Umi: Wh-What’re you so upset about?

Nico: Isn’t it obvious?! I’ve been duped. If we were just cleaning up the grounds in our jerseys, why didn’t you say so in the first place?

Nozomi: I didn’t dupe anyone. All I said was that I’d love to see you in a shrine maiden’s outfit! What a shame I won’t get that opportunity today.

Nico: Y-You shameless trickster!

Eli: Now, now, settle down. There are so many of us, there weren’t enough shrine maiden outfits for everyone. There’s nothing we can do about it now.

Eli: Besides, sweats and jerseys are mush easier to move in, and it’s no big deal if they get dirty. They’re the better choice for cleaning up, no?

Nico: M-Maybe so, but still.

Nozomi: Aww, Nico! You’re even cute when you’re angry. Bear hug time!

Nico: Wha-Wait, stop! *Scream*

Hanayo: N-Nico, Nozomi, the shrine visitors are staring!

Rin: Nico, at least quiet down a little!

Nico: I-I’m the victim here! Anyways, all that talk about delicious treats better not have been a lie, too.

Nozomi: I never lie! You can all look forward to a delicious reward when we’re done.

Nico: *Sigh* Fine. So, what do you need us to do?

Nozomi: We need to split into teams and clean up the areas I’ve marked down. Here’s a map for reference!

Eli: Hmm. What’s this place you circled in a different color?

Nozomi: Before everyone came, I divided the area we’re in charge of into quarters.

Eli: I see. This is a big shrine, after all. It’s more efficient to assign everyone their own section rather than just spread out and clean on our own.

Nozomi: Eli, you and I are in charge of the entrance. We’ll be able to see the whole grounds from there, and go help quickly if anything goes wrong.

Eli: You and I? Together?

Nozomi: Hmm? Do you not want to hang out with me while we clean up? *Whine* *Glance*

Maki: That is sone fifth-rate acting.

Nozomi: *Snicker* No way, that deserves an academy award!

Eli: P-Putting your acting skills aside, I didn’t mean to say I didn’t want to go with you.

Nozomi: Hee, hee. I didn’t think so. All right, Eli and I will go get the supplies. You all decide how to split up and where you’ll clean before we get back, okay?

Honoka: Okay. See you soon!

Eli: …………………

Story 2

Eli: Nozomi? Nozomi? Hmm, she’s gone. Where could she be?

Nozomi: Hey, Eli! You look like you’re looking for someone. Everything all right?

Eli: I could ask you the same question! We were in the middle of cleaning, then all of a sudden you disappeared.

Nozomi: Sorry about that. One of the temple workers called me over to explain where to put the trash when we’re done cleaning.

Eli: Oh, I see. Well, I wish you would’ve told me before you left.

Nozomi: You were so focused on cleaning, I felt bad about interrupting you!

Eli: Of course I’m focused! If I do a bad job today, it’ll reflect poorly on you.

Eli: Not to mention that the rain made the leave very slick. They’re a serious slipping hazard. We need to clean thoroughly so none of the visitors get hurt.

Nozomi: You sure take helping seriously, Eli. Anyways, wanna go check in on the others? I’m curious as to how they’re doing.

Eli: *Chuckle* Me too. I’ve gotten a good bit of the walking paths done, so I suppose we can take a break and peek in on everyone else.

Eli: I hope they’re getting their work done.

Honoka: Whew! The leaves sure are pretty, aren’t they?

Umi: It’s like something out of a storybook. The sight of them really bring joy to my hear. I’m so glad Nozomi asked us to help out today.

Honoka: When we’re all done, we should take a group picture with these beautiful leaves as the backdrop!

Eli: It looks like they’re spending more time looking at the leaves than cleaning them.

Nozomi: Well, it’s not like they’re slacking off entirely. I’d rather they enjoy themselves than just work and be miserable. I think they’ll finish right on time!

Rin: Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere! *Hums* All right, my leaf pile is complete!

Hanayo: It looks like a giant leafy cushion.

Rin: A soft, fluffy leaf cushion sounds so comfy! I really wanna jump into the pile, even if it’s just once. Wanna do it?

Hanayo: We’ll get dirty, Rin.

Nozomi: Seems like they’re having fun, too. Two down, one to go!

Eli: This is Nico and Maki’s area. Look, they’re both just sweeping in silence. I guess it’s because neither of them really wanted to do it?

Nozomi: No, no, look closely at their mouths.

Maki: A change of scenery is helping me think of different melodies.

Nico: Let’s see, if we were going to use fall leaves in a live show we could… No, real leaves are too fragile. Maybe we could make them out of paper?

Nozomi: It looks like their creative juices are really flowing. I guess pretty scenery tends to be inspirational.

Eli: Looks like it. They seem to be progressing fine. At this rate, we should finish right on schedule.

Nozomi: Hey, Eli. Wanna go on a quick shopping errand with me?

Eli: Shopping? In the middle of work?

Nozomi: Don’t sweat it. It’s almost break time, and this errand is actually related to helping the shrine.

Rin: Beep, beep! Wheelbarrow full of leaves, rolling on through!

Maki: And… Whew. All right, that’s the last of the leaves we raked up.

Umi: Does anyone know where Nozomi and Eli went?

Nico: This is ridiculous. Nozomi’s the one who told us to bring all the leaves we raked here at this exact time.

Honoka: This pile of leaves is crazy huge. It’d be perfect for cooking sweet potatoes!

Umi: That’s a nice thought, Honoka, but campfires aren’t permitted within the shrine grounds.

Nozomi: Heh, heh, heh. I thought someone would say that.

Hanayo: Oh, Nozomi, Eli. Where did you two go?

Nozomi: We just had to run a quick errand. Here, this is the special treat I promised you all. A little reward as thanks for all your hard work!

Eli: We bought sweet potatoes for everyone. Let’s take a break and enjoy our reward!

Honoka: Hooray!

Story 3

Rin: Mm-mmm. These sweet potatoes are super yummy!

Umi: I’ll say. Not only are they sweet, they melt in your mouth. It’s like eating cream!

Nozomi: Hee, hee. I’m glad you like them! There’s a new place around here that sells them, and all the reviews say their potatoes are the best.

Maki: I don’t usually eat these, but I’ll try. Mmm. Delicious!

Nico: The best way I can describe the flavor is that it tastes like fall. I have to admit, you delivered on your promise of a delicious treat.

Nozomi: Yay! Even Nico’s in a good mood again! Is there anything the power of potatoes can’t do?

Nico: Hmph! I’m not so immature that I’d hold a grudge over not being able to wear a shrine maiden outfit.

Eli: *Chuckle*

Umi: A lot of people are starting to show up. Look at all the children and their families!

Nozomi: That’s right. The Shichi-Go-San festival is right around the corner, so they must be coming to make reservations and check the shrine out.

Honoka: Didn’t we all do our Shichi-Go-San visits at this shrine?

Umi: We did indeed. I remember Honoka was so sleepy, her head was bobbing up and down the whole time. I was holding my breath watching her.

Honoka: Huh? Did I really do that?

Umi: Kotori and I were whispering to each other about how to wake you up if you fell asleep for real.

Maki: Hee, hee. Once a Honoka, always a Honoka.

Honoka: Grrr. All right, Maki. What were your Shichi-Go-San festivals like?

Maki: What do you mean? It was perfectly normal. They said the prayer, we got our candy sticks, and it was over.

Rin: The colorful candy sticks? I love those! You only see them in stores at this time of year, so when I see them for sale, I always pick some up.

Hanayo: They’re a little messy to eat, but they’re so tasty, I can’t help myself.

Rin: Yeah! And for some reason, they get me all worked up! They’re just sticks of candy, but they’re so long, it feels like holding a sword.

Nico: You sound just like my siblings. Sword-fighting with candy sticks is a big no-no, understand? Cleaning up that mess is a huge pain in the neck.

Nozomi: *Chuckle*

Hanayo: By the way, Nozomi, what were yours like?

Nozomi: Hmm. We moved around a lot, so mine were at different shrines. Oh, but I remember liking going inside the shrine building, since you don’t get to do that often.

Honoka: Oh! Did you decide to work here because you’d been to so many different shrines in your life?

Nozomi: I dunno. Maybe? That was about the age when I started getting interested in spiritual stuff. Maybe it did influence me a little after all.

Honoka: Wow. And what about you, Eli?

Eli: Me? Actually, I don’t remember mine very well.

Eli: I only attended the last celebration when I was seven. Back then, we had our hands full looking after Alisa. All I recall is that I was excited to wear a kimono.

Eli: I have a very clear memory of chasing after Alisa in my kimono and matching footwear, neither of which I was used to wearing. I guess that’s it.

Nico: My siblings were like that, too. Maybe it’s because wearing a kimono was a special treat, but they were so psyched up they couldn’t keep still.

Honoka: Oh, I remember Yukiho was… Huh?

Umi: Yukiho was good as gold during the prayer.

Umi: On the other hand, she got quite desperate trying to wake up her big sister, who was sound asleep in the next seat over.

Honoka: *Whine* I’m a big sister, but I don’t get to join in all the big sister talk!

Story 4

Rin: Thanks for the meal!

Hanayo: It was delicious! Thank you, Nozomi!

Nozomi: You’re very welcome! It was just a little something to thank you all for helping me. Now that our bellies are full, let’s get back to it and finish up!

Honoka: All right! What’s left?

Nozomi: We’ll use some of the leaves for compost, and the rest we’ll put into trash bags and throw out. Here, just press them down to get the air out, then…

Eli: ………………….

Maki: Hmm? What is it, Eli? Is something wrong?

Nico: Hey, wait! Where’re you going?

Nozomi: What’s up?

Umi: I-I have no idea. Eli just took off that way, and Nico and Maki ran after her.

Nozomi: All right. I’ll go see what the problem is. Can the rest of you please bag the leaves?

Umi: Of course. Leave it to us.

Nozomi: Thanks!

Eli: ………………..

Nozomi: *Pant* *Pant* Eli, what’s wrong? What’re you doing way back here?

Eli: See this pouch? It was lying on the ground by that tree.

Maki: It looks like a child’s. Perhaps someone forgot it here?

Nozomi: Let’s not worry about politeness and look inside. Handkerchief, tissues… Nope, nothing with the owner’s name or phone number.

Nico: That’s the age we live in. Is there anything else?

Nozomi: Hang on a sec. Hmm, what’ve we got here? A red hair ornament. Is this for the Shichi-Go-San festival?

Eli: *Gasp*

Nozomi: It must belong to someone who came to get an early look at the shrine. Guess we should bring it to the office.

Maki: Yes, if they were just coming to see the shrine in advance, they’ll be back on the day of the celebration itself.

Eli: I know whose this is. There was a little girl with braided hair in a red dress. She had the pouch over her shoulder.

Eli: Yes, I’m sure of it. When we came back from buying the sweet potatoes, we passed through the shrine gate together.

Eli: She might still be around. I’m going to look for her!

Nico: W-Wait up! You can’t possibly search this whole area by yourself!

Eli: But it’s for the celebration. Even if we return it to her the day of, it might not get to her in time.

Maki: It’s definitely a possibility, but she may not even be here any more.

Nozomi: Maybe, maybe not. I think it’s worth looking for her.

Eli: Nozomi?

Nozomi: Eli and I will run off and bring this back as quickly as we can. Nico, Maki, can you get back to the others and finish up the disposal?

Maki: We can, but are you really going to be able to find her with just the two of you?

Nozomi: Were the only ones who’ve actually seen her. This is the most efficient way to do it!

Nico: Oh, good grief! Fine, find her and get back to us immediately!

Nozomi: Thanks, Nico. I promise I’ll pay you back. C’mon, Eli!

Eli: Huh? Whoa!

Nozomi: All right, Eli. Do you remember which way she came from?

Eli: Yes, over there. From the train station.

Nozomi: Then it’s pretty likely she came here by train. If we hurry, we might still make it.

Eli: But why are you coming, too?

Nozomi: What’re you talking about? Two heads are better than one. Now let’s split up and find her!

Eli: R-Right!

Story 5

Eli: Nozomi, did you find her?

Nozomi: Sorry. I looked all over the electronics district, but no luck. It was really crowded since it’s a weekend, so I might’ve missed her. And the station?

Eli: I looked everywhere, including past the ticket gates, but it was crowded there too. She might’ve already boarded her train and left Akihabara.

Eli: I’m sorry, Nozomi. I didn’t mean to drag you into this.

Nozomi: Don’t be silly! As a shrine worker, or a helper, at least, I want all the kids to have smiles on their faces at their Shichi-Go-San festival.

Nozomi: But if we can’t find her today, we need to think about our next step.

Nozomi: We should turn it in at the shrine office. Or maybe the police box? They’d take care of it, even if someone came by late at night.

Eli: Good idea. Oh, but what of she notices it’s missing and comes back to the shrine looking for it?

Nozomi: We might be passing right by each other. We could fix that if we went back to the shrine, but kids forget little things a lot. Her parents might not notice.

Eli: You’re right. It was like that then, too. That’s why we need to find her.

Nozomi: Eli?

Honoka: Ah! Eli, Nozomi, I finally found you! C’mere!

Eli: H-Honoka?! What are you doing here?

Umi: We finished cleaning up, so I got permission to go look for you two.

Eli: You took care of all those leaves already?

Umi: Yup. We were like a well-oiled machine, so we got done faster than we thought. Did you find that girl?

Nozomi: Not yet. Maybe we should assume she’s not in Akihabara anymore.

Honoka: One of the others might’ve found her, though.

Eli: Others? Is everyone searching for her now?

Rin: Whew, finally caught up! Heeey!

Hanayo: W-We heard everything from Maki. I remember seeing a girl like that when her parents asked me for directions.

Eli: You met them, too?

Hanayo: Yeah. They were asking about places to get lunch in Akihabara.

Maki: That means it’s highly likely they’re still in town.

Nico: And it just so happens we’re right by the restaurant you recommended, right Hanayo? If we look around this area, we’ve still got a chance to find them!

Nozomi: Nice. That’s just what we needed to hear! Let’s split up and start searching!

Honoka: Yeah, let’s roll! Oof! Wh-Whoa! Sorry!

Umi: Honoka, what happened?

Honoka: I was about to run into someone. Wait a second. Ah, ha!

Nozomi: Honoka, what’re you shouting about now? Oh! It’s the girl with the braids and the red dress!

Eli: That’s definitely her!

Epilogue

Hanayo: Hee, hee. I’m glad we managed to find her.

Honoka: Me, too. Did you see how happy she was?

Maki: We’re lucky she was still in Akihabara.

Umi: So the story was that they had a late lunch and were just about to head home, right? Her parents were very grateful. It was worth the effort to look for her.

Eli: Thank you, everyone. And also, I’m sorry for dragging everyone out here today.

Nico: Dragged us out? Are you joking? Nozomi asked us to help, same as you, and we agreed. We did all the work we promised to do.

Rin: Yeah, and you were rushing to finish faster than anyone! You were yelling, “Hurry and finish so we can chase after them!”

Nico: Y-You don’t need to bother with every little detail!

Rin: Ah, ha, ha! Nico, you’re turning beet red!

Nico: Rin! Get back here!

Nozomi: *Laughs* All joking aside, I’m so happy we found that little girl.

Eli: Same here.

Nozomi: I have to say, Eli, I’m really impressed with you memory. We saw a ton of people today, but you still remembered exactly what that girl was wearing!

Eli: Her dress looked just like one Alisa used to wear.

Nozomi: Alisa?

Eli: When she was seven, no, six, I gave her the entire kimono outfit I wore for my Shichi-Go-San. Including the hairpin, one just like that girl’s.

Eli: Alisa loved the hairpin as much as me. She kept it in her own pouch, but when we went to the shrine for a pre-festival visit, she lost it.

Eli: My parents and I looked everywhere, but we never managed to find it. Alisa was so sad, and I regret not being able to make it better.

Nozomi: I see. No wonder you were so focused on getting it back to that little girl. You didn’t want her to have the same sad memory as Alisa.

Eli: But I ended up inconveniencing everyone else! I need to apologize to everyone at the shrine, too. I won’t let this damage your reputation, Nozomi.

Nozomi: Don’t be so dramatic. Here, you can make up for it by coming with me to the shrine office and helping me get the thank-you present for everyone. Sound good?

Eli: Of course! If that’s all it takes to clear this up, it’s a very small price to pay.

Nozomi: *Snicker* So, how’d you like today? Did it jog your memory about your own Shichi-Go-San?

Eli: I’m afraid not. I really can’t remember my own. But now, at least, I’ve got a happy Shichi-Go-San memory to look back on.

Eli: Thanks for asking me to come today, Nozomi.

Nozomi: Hee, hee! And thank you for accepting!

Honoka: Hmm? What’re you two talking about?

Eli: Huh? Oh, err…

Nozomi: We were talking about how you all were such superstars today, and what kinda reward I should give everyone the next time I need help!

Umi: We don’t need any rewards. We spend so much time practicing on the shrine grounds, it’s only fair that we return the favor.

Rin: Those sweet potatoes were really yummy, though.

Maki: And it was a nice change of pace.

Nozomi: I see. All right, next time I’ll arrange for the organizers to provide all of us an extra-special treat!

Umi: It should be something sweet, like today’s sweet potatoes. How about some Japanese confections from Honoka’s bakery?

Honoka: Me? I’d rather have cream and frosting than sweet bean jam. Besides, December’s coming up! We should have cookies, and cakes!

Umi: Really? I’m sure your father would be happy to make us a wonderful Christmas daifuku, or something similar.

Honoka: Please, don’t tell him that, Umi. He’ll definitely take it as a serious request!

Eli: *Chuckle* Sounds wonderful. When he’s done, can I try them out, too?

Honoka: You too, Eli?! Geez!
