Event Story: Fear Not the Gentle Ogre[]

Prologue
Kotori: Hey, does everyone have a minute? I wanted to talk about our plans for the Setsubun holiday. Honoka: Hmm? What’s up? Oh, did we get a request to do alive show on Setsubun? Kotori: Well, it’s not a live show, but they do want is to volunteer. Umi: Volunteer? For what? Eli: Let us explain, Kotori. So, everyone knows about the kindergarten near our school, right? Hanayo: Of course! I always pass by it when I go out shopping. Nozomi: Well, they scatter soybeans in class every year, and this year they want to switch things up and do a big Setsubun event. Eli: And the school chairwoman just informed us that the kindergarten asked if µ's would volunteer to help. Honoka: A Setsubun event! Laugh That takes me back. I remember doing the bean scattering tradition every year as a kid, too. Hanayo: Then afterwards, you eat one bean for each year in your age. I used to lie about how many I’d eaten so I could eat a whole bunch. Rin: Yeah, yeah! Setsubun beans don’t really have much flavor, but I remember they’d taste a little better when I ate them with all my friends. Nico: All right, enough strolling down memory lane. I don’t mind helping out, but what specifically are we supposed to do at this event? Kotori: If we participate, we’d eat lunch together after the bean scattering, and then they’d like us to do a mini-live show. Eli: What do you think? I don’t want to force anyone. Honoka: I’m so in. It sounds like a blast! Rin: If we’re throwing soybeans, someone has to play the ogre right? I call dibs! Roooar! Hanayo: Rin, you sound like a lion, not an ogre. Kotori: Giggle That’s great! You all are the best. Kotori: Wait, what’s wrong, Eli? You look a bit glum. Eli: Oh, you know. I was just thinking about what food they’ll have for lunch. Honoka: Huh? What about it? Eli: Well, the traditional Setsubun food is ehomaki sushi, isn’t it? That’s, umm, well… Nozomi: Oh, Eli doesn’t like seaweed! Eli: But I can’t be a picky eater in front of the kindergarteners! I need to train myself to eat it before the event. Nozomi: Don’t get your priorities backwards. What if you force yourself to eat it and end up feeling sick? Honoka: I’ve got it! I’ll eat Eli’s sushi for her! Umi: You just want to stuff yourself, don’t you, Honoka? Honoka: N-No, I’m trying to help! Maki: ………………… Hanayo: Maki? Maki: Huh? Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about something. Hanayo: Are you worried about something, too? Do you not like seaweed either? Maki: No, no. I was just thinking about what kind of songs would work best for the mini-live show. Nico: It’s for kindergarteners, so we should do something that’s fun and upbeat. We should all put our heads together to pick the music. Maki: I agree. I’ll try to think of some phrases that seem like they’d fit what we want to do. Honoka: In any case, let’s all work hard to get ready for the Setsubun event! Rin: Yeah!

Story 1
Maki: No, that doesn’t feel right either. Let’s try something else. Maki: Huh? Holy cow, it’s so late! Where did the time go? Nico: Maki? Wow, you’re still here. That’s some impressive stick-to-it-iveness. Eli: How’s the songwriting going? Are you making much progress? Maki: I suppose. I’ve got some rough ideas, but nothing that’s polished enough to present to you all. Eli: Sounds like you’re having a little trouble. Anything we can do? Maki: I guess I am. I’m trying to create something that has the image of Setsubun, but I haven’t been able to hit the right note yet. Figuratively, and literally. Nico: Coming up with a Setsubun-themed song does sound kinda tough. Eli: Why not pick another theme? No one said you have to make a brand-new song. We’ve got a big catalog you can choose from. Maki: Thanks, you two. But I really want to make this special for the kindergarteners. I need to think about it. Maki: I thought about making something that sounds like a nursery rhyme to make it easy for them to understand, but even then, I still need a central motif. Maki: And above all, I’m not sure I should even be deciding all this on my own. Eli: Maki, thank you so much. You always put such thought and care into the songs you write. Maki: Wh-Where’d that come from? You don’t have to thank me for anything. I chose to do this on my own. Eli: Well, regardless. Actually, does anyone mind if I take the lead for a bit? Nico: Do you have an idea? Eli: Maybe. I won’t know if it’s even possible until we all discuss it as a group, though. Kotori: A Setsubun musical? Eli: Yes. I think that if our goal is to do something the kindergarteners will enjoy, a musical play might be our best bet. Eli: After a short performance, we’ll sing a nursery rhyme type of song about the story. That’s the gist of it. Honoka: That sounds neat! I used to love singing songs that incorporated kids’ rhymes. Rin: It’ll be a lot easier to remember a story if there’s a song to go with it! It just seems to stay in your head better. Umi: In that case, the lyrics should sound like dialogue from the story. Hanayo: Won’t it end up being a lot different from the songs we usually sing? Eli: Hanayo makes a good point. This won’t be like our normal shows. We’ll have to practice acting as well as singing, and it might end up being a lot more work. Honoka: I’m in! Putting on a musical sounds really fun, and I’m sure the kids will love it, too! Nozomi: Ditto for me. I think it’ll be worth all the extra effort. Nico: If we’re gonna do it, we have to do it right! Is that clear, everyone? Kotori: Yes, ma’am! I’m so excited we’re doing a musical for the Setsubun event! Oh, but wait a second. Maki: What is it? Kotori: What IS the story of Setsubun, anyway? Honoka: Well, the ogres come in, and you throw roasted soybeans at them to drive them out. Kotori: Yes, I know. But WHY do we throw the beans at them? Honoka: Umm, uhh, hmm. Yeah, why do we do that? Eli: It looks like we need to start by learning more about the history of Setsubun.

Story 2
Umi: All that research at the library, and we couldn’t find a single story about what brought about the birth of Setsubun. Kotori: I thought the tradition of scattering roasted soybeans to drive out ogres coming into the home had been around forever. Rin: Why would ogres run away just from being hit with tiny little soybeans, anyway? Hanayo: Hmm. I found an article online that says they run because it hurts them when they get hit in the eye with the beans. Rin: Yeah, but then why wouldn’t you just throw a rock or something instead? That’d hurt way more than a bean. Hanayo: I-I have no idea. Nozomi: Basically, we found a lot of theories, but nothing that ties it all together. Honoka: I guess that means it’s up to us to make up an original Setsubun story, huh? Eli: That’s probably the easiest option. And most people think of driving out the ogres when they think of Setsubun, so I guess that’ll be our theme. Honoka: Driving out the ogres makes me think of Momotaro and Little One Inch. Oh, and Kintaro the Golden Boy, but his story was different. Hanayo: Kintaro grew up to get rid of an ogre named Shuten-doji though, right? Honoka: Then we’ll add Kintaro! Talk about an all-star team! Nico: That’s so simplistic. Whatever, it’s for little kids, so I guess the easier to follow it is, the better. Maki: Who’s going to play the ogres? Based on the story we’re making, we’re going to need more than one. How should we pick? Honoka: Uhh, hmm. By… nomination? Like, we vote on who’s the most ogre-ish among us? Kotori: I don’t know about that, Honoka. Nico: Oh, heck no. Who on earth would be excited to be told they’re like a nasty old ogre? Even if you don’t mean anything by it, that’s still mean. Hanayo: Yes, I can see that causing a lot of problems after Setsubun’s over. Honoka: Then how should we pick? Rin: If no one wants to do it, I volunteer! Roar! Hanayo: Rin, I told you, you sound more like a lion. Eli: Can’t we just play rock-paper-scissors? That’s perfectly fair, so no one should have any hurt feelings. Honoka: Works for me! Ready? Rock, paper, scissors, shoot! Nico: Wow, a clean split. I guess we’ve got our ogres. Hanayo: Eli and Maki? Maki: Looks like it. Eli: Groan Nico: A-Are you okay, Eli? That’s a heck of a scowl. You can play an ogre, can’t you? Eli: S-Sure I can! I’m the one who suggested we decide by rock-paper-scissors, so I kinda have to. Nozomi: You’re absolutely sure? Eli: Yes, of course. I just didn’t expect that. Eli: So the ogres are me and Maki. You don’t have any problem with that, do you Maki? Maki: No, it’s fine. It’s just… Eli: Just what? Maki: Oh, nothing. Never mind.

Story 3
Umi: Well, now we’ve got our ogres. It’s time to go home, so we’ll have to decide the other roles and work on they story itself tomorrow. Maki: Yes. See you tomorrow, everyone. Rin: Hey, Maki! Let’s walk home together! Huh? Aww, she’s already gone. Eli: I’ve got an errand to run, too. Nozomi: Eli? Whoa, she’s gone, too. Honoka: What’s up with them? Nico: Well, Maki’s probably gonna hole up in her room and work on the music, right? Hopefully all our conversations sparked some inspiration in her. Hanayo: She’s gotta make a theme song for Setsubun. I wonder how it’ll turn out? Kotori: I can’t wait to hear it! I’ll need to work just as hard on the costumes! Umi: Speaking of which, since we’re including Momotaro, we want to include his animal companions. How should we handle them? Animal suit pajamas, perhaps? Kotori: I dunno, that’s going to be a lot. I think we can get by with masks and clothes that match the color for that animal, don’t you? Nico: We can hammer out the details tomorrow, like Umi said. Now, it’s about time the rest of us headed home! Eli: Pant Pant Maki! Wait up! Maki: Eli? Why’re you trying to chase me down? What’s wrong? Eli: I’m the one who should be asking that! You sounded like you had zero interest in writing a story. Are you upset you ended up being an ogre? Maki: Not really, no. If I wasn’t fine with it, I would have said something when deciding with rock-paper-scissors was suggested. Eli: Then why run off? Maki: Eli, what do you think of when you think of ogres? Eli: What do I think? Hmmm. Well, ogres are big, and violent, and scary. Things like that, I guess. Maki: Exactly. Most people have the same image of them as you do. But not everyone. Eli: Maki, is your image of an ogre different? Maki: In every traditional Japanese fairy tale, the ogres are always hated and loathed, right? They don’t look normal, and they’re big and strong. Maki: But in some of them, they’re humans who are labeled “ogres” by other people simply for looking different or living different lifestyles. Maki: That’s what was bothering me. I just think… that it’s kind of sad that they get pelted with beans and chased away just because they have scary faces or big bodies. Eli: Oh, Maki. Maki: Ahh! Umm, err, sorry, never mind. I know it’s weird. I used to think that when I’d read picture books as a little girl. I guess those thoughts never went away. Eli: I think you’ve hit on something important. It may very well be that some of the kids in the kindergarten feel the same way you do. Eli: I think that what you felt then is still important. If you felt bad for the ogres as a child, then there may be kids in this class who agree with you, too. Maki: I suppose it’s possible. Eli: Chuckle You’re so sweet, Maki. I’m glad you told me all this. Maki: Huh? What do you mean? Eli: I’ve got a great idea for the story of our musical. Do you have a little time right now?

Story 4
Eli: What do you all think of the story Maki and I wrote? I think everything came together pretty well. Honoka: I-It’s amazing! It’s really good! I never thought it’d end with the ogres becoming friends with everyone instead of being driven away. That’s pretty sweet! Eli: If it ended with everyone hating them, then they’ll always be scary to people. I thought it was more cheerful to have them make friends. Nozomi: So it’s not, “Out with the ogres,” but “In with the ogres?” You know, I kinda like the sound of that! Maki: The caveat is that this more or less makes the ogres the main characters. Do you think that’s okay? The whole point of the event was to drive them out. Nico: I wouldn’t say that. The real goal is to put on a musical that makes the kids happy! I don’t see a problem with it. Kotori: Me neither! And I bet they’ll feel a lot happier if the ogres make friends with them! Hanayo: Me too. To be honest, I wasn’t excited about driving away Maki and Eli, even if it was just a play. Rin: Me three! Even though I’m gonna play Momotaro, I doubt I could ever beat ogre-Eli and ogre-Maki. Maki: Excuse me?! Umi: Don’t be rude, Rin. You need to learn to sugar-coat things a little. For example, you could say that they’re menacing, or intimidating. Eli: Am I the only one who thinks Umi’s version sounded a million times ruder? Kotori: E-Easy, easy. Let’s figure out the rest of the roles, okay? Where were we? Nozomi: The ogre fighters are Momotaro and his dog, pheasant, and monkey, Little One Inch, and Kintaro and his bear. They meet up and head to the island of ogres. Rin: Seven versus two? The ogres are way outnumbered. We totally look like the bad guys here! Kotori: They all end up making friends in the end, it’s gonna be fine! Nico: That’s what you’re worried about? Whatever. We’ve got our scripts, so let’s start rehearsing. Is everyone ready? Honoka: You bet! First up is… Nico: Hi-yah! Take that! You give up now? Eli: Ouch, ouch, ouch. You win! I surrender! Kotori: Have you learned your lesson now? Don’t let us catch you bothering the villagers anymore! Maki: Whimper We weren’t causing trouble. We just wanted to play with everyone. Umi: You call that playing? Nozomi: C’mon, you went way overboard. If you wanna play, you gotta think about what you’re doing. All you two did was scare everyone! Eli: But we don’t know any other way to play. Hanayo: Oh! Well, why don’t you play a singing game with us? Maki: Singing? What is “singing”? Rin: Huh? You two don’t know what singing is? Honoka: I see. Okay, we’ll teach you! Let’s all bury the hatchet and sing together! Nico: And here’s where we start singing. Mm-hmm. This play’s turning out even better than I expected! Eli: Now, what are we going to do for the song? If it’s too much work, we can pick one that’s a close enough match for the play. Maki: No, it’s all right. You can leave it to me. Maki: Thank you, Eli. And thank you, everyone. I think that I’ll be able to write a great song thanks to all of you.

Story 5
Honoka: Whew. We did it! The Setsubun event musical was a smashing success! Kotori: Our two ogres were super popular! Eli, Maki, you totally outdid yourselves capturing the hearts of those kids. Nico: Who wouldn’t be captivated by such passionate performances? Even I got drawn in during the scene where you two cried and apologized. Hanayo: The ogres got much bigger cheers in the second act. That one little boy was even clinging to us, trying to stop us from going after the ogres! Nozomi: What did he say? “Don’t pick on the poor ogres”? He must be a really sweet, sensitive kid by nature. Rin: Even still, I bet the kids wouldn’t have been as into it if it hadn’t been for Eli and Maki’s award-worthy acting! Maki: G-Geez, enough with the flattery! I was just focused on following the script. I didn’t have a spare moment to look around and gauge anyone’s reaction. Eli: You didn’t? What about that one boy who was crying? You hugged him and told him “thank you” in the most gentle voice. Maki: Th-That was no big deal! Eli: At any rate, it was almost impossible to get out of there. They didn’t want us to go! Now it’s really late. Honoka: How many times did they ask for “just one more song?” I don’t think we’ve ever done that many encores. Umi: By the end of it, they’d learned our songs by heart. It was wonderful to get to sing the last song along with them. Kotori: Yeah, yeah! It was a ton of fun singing together. Rin: Too bad they were so tired they fell asleep afterwards. We missed our chance to eat lunch with them, and now I’m starving! Nozomi: Giggle You said it. You all wanna eat the ehomaki sushi I brought? Nico: As worn out as I am, I bet it’s gonna taste fantastic. Here’s yours, Eli. Dig in. Eli: Oh, umm, uhh… I’m, well… Kotori: It’s fine, Eli. There’s a special roll just for you. Eli: A special roll? Oh! Honoka: Huh? Hey, is Eli’s ehomaki sushi different from everyone else’s? Hanayo: There’s no seaweed. Is the whole surface covered with black sesame seeds? Eli: Uhh, what is this? Kotori: Maki went to the lunch stand and put in a special order for one ehomaki roll without any seaweed. Kotori: The server said this is on their secret menu for people who don’t like seaweed! They let us order it because Otonokizaka orders from them often. Maki: I-It wasn’t me! Kotori did it! Kotori: I only told you about the stand. You were the one who suggested it and placed the order! Eli: Chuckle It’s delicious. Thank you, Maki! Maki: I-It’s nothing. I’m paying you back, that’s all. Eli: Paying me back? Maki: Never mind, never mind! For goodness sake, let’s just eat already! Rin: Giggle Oh, Maki, you can’t hide a thing from us! …Urgh! Chomp Maki: You can have my ehomaki too! Just please, please stop talking!

Epilogue
Honoka: Hey Eli, I saw we got a package or something earlier. Who’s it from? Eli: Oh, I’m glad you’re here. Take a look, everyone! It’s a picture from the kindergarten that held last week’s Setsubun event. Honoka: Really? Aww, lemme see! Hanayo: Giggle Everyone looks so adorable! Eli, Maki, you two must be the cutest ogres I’ve ever seen. Maki: Th-This is humiliating. Please don’t look at me. Rin: Don’t be so bashful! Giggle Hmm? Hey, what’s this one in the other envelope? Umi: It’s dated the day after we did the play. Kotori: Tee-hee. That picture is an especially cute one of everyone singing our song in a chorus! Nico: Huh? Which song? The Setsubun one? Eli: Exactly. After the performance, the teachers asked me for a recording of the song, so I sent them a CD with the instrumental track. Eli: Apparently they couldn’t get enough of it. They’ve been singing and dancing to it non-stop. And not just in music class, but during recess, too! Kotori: All the kids are loving it. I couldn’t believe my wears when the teacher told me what was going on, but I guess it’s true! Giggle Eli: And since it’s about befriending the ogres instead of driving them out, it’s perfect for the kids to sing with their classmates. Maki: Sniff Eli: The teacher also said the parents have been praising the song, too. It’s a runaway hit! Maki: R-Really? Rin: That’s awesome, Maki! You’re at the top of the charts! Maki: I-I guess. The kindergarteners only like it because we were so enthusiastic when we performed it for them. It’s not because the song’s anything special. Nozomi: Oh, there’s no need to start blushing. Just take the compliment for once! Maki: I-I’m not blushing! Maki: I mean, it’s a lot of fun to sing songs that I’ve written with µ's. But I’m really, really happy to see such a big group enjoying singing my song! I-I guess. Hanayo: Giggle You should be. That’s why we need to sing lots of songs that make people feel happy and cheerful inside! Maki: Agreed! Honoka: I’ve gotta say, it was cool to put on a musical for kids! The singing and dancing was like a live show, but the performance was a nice change of pace! Kotori: I agree. I hope we get another chance to do something like that again soon! Rin: The next time a kindergarten wants us to put on a Setsubun event, I call dibs on being an ogre! And I’m gonna become best friends with everyone! Umi: If you want to be friends with the kindergarteners, there’s no reason you have to wait until next year’s Setsubun. Nico: Okay, that’s enough patting ourselves on the back. We need to start today’s practice! You never know what kind of event we’ll be asked to join next! Rin: Right on! I’m gonna go full blast today! Aww yeah! Nico: There’s no time to rest on our laurels!
