Event Story: I'm Cautious Because I'm Kind[]

Score Match Round 35 StoryBar

Prologue

Honoka: So the theme for the new song we’re debuting at our next like show is “playing in the snow,” huh? Hmm. Hmmmmmmmm.

Eli: Oh, what’s wrong, Honoka? You look like you’re really racking your brain. Umi and Kotori, too. Having a little songwriter’s block?

Kotori: Yeah. We’re having a tough time conveying the idea of having fun playing in the snow.

Umi: My memories of playing in the snow are limited to things like building snowmen. But I’m not sure it’s something we can use for writing a song.

Honoka: *Sigh* Whose bright idea was this, anyway? Who said we should make the song’s theme be about playing in the snow?!

Nico: Are you serious? Honoka, you’re the one who said, “Winter means snow! We need a fun song about snow!”

Umi: That’s right. And on top of that, when we were brainstorming about what makes the snow fun, you said “Why don’t we make it about playing in the snow?”

Honoka: Oops. You’re right, it was me. I apologize.

Nico: To be fair, we all agreed unanimously to make that our theme, so we’re not trying to blame you. Now, what is it that we’re missing? What do we need?

Honoka: We need a magic cauldron that generates perfect song ideas.

Kotori: Umm, I don’t think that’s something we could actually get.

Eli: Let’s put aside the song for a moment. We need to settle on costumes. How’re you progressing, Kotori?

Kotori: About the same. I need to settle on a design that captures the idea of playing in the snow. Playing in the snow looks like… like… *Groan*

Hanayo: Looks like Kotori’s not doing any better.

Maki: I can’t claim to be doing much better with the composition. If only I had something to help me crystalize my vision.

Rin: Oh! I just got a great idea! Why don’t we do an overnight trip?

Eli: A trip?

Rin: Yeah! I bet we’d get all the inspiration we need if we went somewhere full of snow! Right, Maki?

Maki: Huh?! I, umm, guess so?

Kotori: Hey, that’s a great idea! Maybe being around actual snow would make it easier to think of costumes.

Honoka: I’m in! Skiing, snowboarding, snowball fights! A snowy mountain is like, snow activity central!

Umi: We’re not going on vacation, Honoka. In fact, going on a trip means we need to be even more diligent about getting things done.

Umi: To that end, I’ll get working on a training regimen suited for a snowy mountain. I expect everyone here to follow it to the letter.

Honoka: Wh-Whoa, hold on! You don’t have to get all wound up. I’ll work hard and train properly, I promise!

Hanayo: Wow, a trip to a snowy mountain. Spending time in a different place might be just the ticket to coming up with good ideas. I can’t wait to go!

Rin: Me neither! I’m gonna make a whole army of snowmen!

Eli: Rin, what did Umi just talk about? Also, Nico, is something wrong? You don’t look too enthusiastic.

Nico: I’m not against going on a trip, and it does seem like it’d help with the songwriting process, but the idea of a snowy mountain specifically worries me.

Nico: I mean, it’s hard to get up to the mountains even in perfect weather, and even harder to secure help if there’s an emergency. Plus, there’s all that snow!

Nozomi: *Laugh* You worry too much, Nico. Here, let me do a quick card reading to put your mind at ease. See?

Nozomi: You card is the “Storm.”

Nico: That’s literally the worst possible omen! Now I’m even more worried!

Eli: C-Calm down. As long as we get to our destination safely, we should be fine. The real problem is picking a place to stay.

Honoka: Can we build a snow hut? I’ve always wanted to spend the night in one of those!

Umi: Are you joking, Honoka? Do you have any idea how cold a snowy mountain gets?

Kotori: Yeah. Ideally, we want a cottage, or an inn. The problem is that they’re probably all booked up. …Right?

Rin: At times like these, there’s only one person we can rely on.

Maki: Wh-What? Why’s everyone looking at me? What do you all expect me to do?!

Hanayo: Does your dad have a cabin or something up in the mountains, Maki?

Maki: Huh? I-I don’t know. I’ll have to ask him!

Rin: Ask him, pretty please! We’re all counting on you, Maki!

Maki: F-Fine, if you insist. I’ll check with him.

Rin: Yay!

Nico: *Sigh* Is this really going to work out?

Story 1

Rin: Here we are, on our snowy mountain trip. And holy cow, is this place amazing! This cottage is totally chic!

Hanayo: This is going to be a fantastic trip.

Maki: We’re lucky my father’s friend was willing to let us stay here. He said he hasn’t used it much lately, and to forgive anything that’s run-down or lacking.

Eli: *Chuckle* Look at this place. There’s not a thing to complain about. Thanks, Maki. You’ve come through once again!

Kotori: There’s even a grocery store within walking distance. Hmm? Hey, where’s Nico?

Nozomi: I know she was with us when we got off the bus. Then again, with all that luggage, I’m not surprised she fell behind.

Nico: *Pant* *Wheeze* F-Finally made it.

Eli: It took you long enough, Nico. I still can’t believe how many suitcases you brought. Don’t you think you’re a little over-prepared?

Nico: Y-You all are just taking the mountains too lightly! What’re those light clothes gonna do for you if disaster strikes?! *Pant* *Gasp*

Kotori: We’re not climbing Mount Everest, you know. I still say you’re worrying too much.

Nico: Everest or not, if it snows, there’ll be no difference as far as we’re concerned. Snow may be pretty to look at, but it’s a tremendous pain to deal with!

Nico: You’ve gotta be prepared for the worst. You know what they say. It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Hanayo: It looks like you wiped yourself out carrying all of that here though, Nico.

Nico: I-It’s just a few essentials. This isn’t nearly enough to finish me… *Collapse*

Kotori: Aah, Nico! I knew it. She’s completely exhausted.

Nico: *Groan*

Kotori: Let’s get her inside and lay her down. Can everyone help me bring in her luggage?

Hanayo: S-Sure! Now I wish we’d waited for her on the way up.

Umi: We kept asking, and she insisted she was fine, and not to wait.

Kotori: These things weigh a ton. What the heck does she have in here, anyways? Huh? Canned food?!

Honoka: No wonder they’re so heavy! Sure, it’s the main way to preserve food, but still!

Maki: I even told everyone that I had food brought here beforehand, and that we only needed to bring clothes.

Rin: I’m really impressed Nico managed to lug all that stuff this far.

Umi: I wonder if we shouldn’t have brought more with us just in case, as well.

Kotori: Maybe we should have all sat down and discussed what to bring before we left.

Honoka: More importantly… Umi, Kotori! Once we bring in the luggage, let’s take a quick break, then go skiing! There’s a big slope near here!

Umi: Honoka, we didn’t come here to play, remember?

Nozomi: She’s right. We should hold off on the games and hunker down in here today.

Kotori: Is something the matter, Nozomi? You keep staring off into the sky. Do you see something?

Nozomi: The clouds are moving really fast. We might be in for some rough weather.

Story 2

Kotori: *Sigh* Nozomi was right on the money. Look at that wind and snow. It’s really getting bad out there.

Eli: We’re lucky we got here and brought in everyone’s bags before the blizzard hit.

Kotori: In this weather, we’ve got no choice but to stay inside and ride it out. I don’t even think we’ll be able to get to the store, much less go skiing.

Honoka: *Whine* Lousy lying weather forecast!

Umi: Weather in the mountains changes quickly. That’s just how things are. We’re fortunate this didn’t happen en route.

Nico: It’s because µ's took its name from the goddess of music. Maybe the muses and the goddess of snow don’t get along?

Nozomi: Hmm, I’ve never heard any stories about that. Huh? Nico, you’re awake! Are you okay?

Nico: Yeah, I’m fine. That little rest was all I needed to recharge.

Kotori: That’s a relief! Anyways, since we don’t have anything else to do, why don’t I start on dinner? What should I make?

Hanayo: Good idea! It’s a little early, but I’m already getting hungry.

Eli: Okay, then. First, we’ll decide on the sleeping arrangements and clean up the rooms. Kotori, I’ll help you cook. It’ll go faster with two people, right?

Kotori: Yeah! I’ll start washing the ingredients. Huh?

Rin: What is it, Kotori?

Kotori: Umm, I turned on the faucet, but no water’s coming out. What’s wrong with it?

Maki: Oh, no! I forgot! They leave the water main to the cottage turned off to keep the pipes from freezing!

Kotori: Wh-What’re we gonna do? I can’t cook anything without water.

Maki: Just hang on. I’ll go open the valve right away! Then we’ll be able to…

Nico: You’re gonna go out in this blizzard?! You can’t even see your hand in front of your face out there. If you rush out unprepared, you could get in big trouble.

Maki: B-But we can’t do anything without water.

Nico: Relax, I’ve got plenty of water. Use this.

Kotori: Huh? Bottled water? Oh my gosh, look at all this! You brought all of this?

Nico: Up in the snowy mountains, there’s always the risk of pipes freezing no matter where you stay. I just came prepared is all.

Nico: I brought enough to last everyone two or three meals. It should be enough to get us through this. Oh, and I brought canned food, too.

Eli: Wow. No wonder your luggage was so heavy.

Nozomi: You should’ve said something. We could’ve helped carry it! At least we’re saved now, thanks to you!

Nico: Heh, heh, heh. This little bit is as light as a feather to yours truly.

Umi: Says the girl who collapsed as soon as she got here.

Nico: C-Clam it! I’m fully recovered now!

Kotori: Thank you so much, Nico! I’ll definitely be able to make dinner with all this.

Nico: It’s too early to celebrate. The wind outside hasn’t died down at all.

Kotori: What does it mean for us if the wind doesn’t stop?

Nico: Well, in the worst-case scenario, it could blow over a power pole, or send a huge tree branch into the power lines. *Gasp*

Kotori: Huh? Th-The lights went out!

Story 3

Hanayo: A blackout?!

Rin: It’s pitch black! I can’t see a thing!

Umi: N-Now what do we do? I-Is there a flashlight anywhere?

Nico: Whoa, don’t panic! Running around without thinking is extra dangerous in the dark.

Honoka: B-But we…

Nico: If you trip, or hit your leg on a sharp corner, you’ll be too hurt to perform in the show! Calm down, and wait for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

Nico: After a while, the light from outside should be enough for us to at least tell where everyone and everything is in the room.

Kotori: Y-You’re right. Wait, then who’s moving around?

Nico: Relax, it’s me. I memorized the layout of the room and the spot where our luggage is the second I set foot in here.

Eli: You looked like you were passed out, but you still took everything in? You’re superhuman, Nico.

Nico: Don’t shower me with praise just yet. Remember how Nozomi said the weather was going to get rough? Let me get my backpack; I’ve got just what we need.

Kotori: *Gasp* It’s light again!

Nico: It’s an electric lantern! It puts out a lot of light. Enough to illuminate a whole room of this size. Plus, you can use it like a flashlight.

Nico: I’ll put one in the living room, and one in the kitchen. C’mon, Kotori. Let’s get dinner going. I’ll help you, too.

Kotori: But all we’ve got is an electric induction heating cooktop. We can’t use it until the power comes back on.

Nico: Yeah, I guess we can’t use the rice cooker, either. Oh, well. Hang on a second. Up you go!

Kotori: Huh? Nico, don’t tell me you brought a camp stove?

Nico: Sure! It’s portable, so we don’t use it at home, and it’s not that big. This will be enough to cook some rice and make some sides afterwards.

Eli: You really thought of everything, Nico. I bow to your knack for preparedness.

Rin: Hey, Nico! I found a kerosene heater in the back of that closet. Does it look usable?

Nico: Let me see. Hmm. It’s a bit old, but it looks solid. We’ll get it going later to keep ourselves warm.

Honoka: Nico, Nico! Is there anything I can do to help?

Nico: Don’t worry about it. Focus on preparing for the cold. It’s going to be a lot colder than it is now when night rolls around.

Honoka: Good point. I’ll go to the bedrooms and get some blankets!

Eli: Speaking of staying warm, it’d be best if we didn’t sleep in separate bedrooms. We should all stay together in the living room.

Hanayo: Only having one lantern for light makes me nervous. Is there anything else we can use for light?

Nico: That’d be good. Hey, Maki, does this cottage have fire alarms?

Maki: Huh? N-No. It’s pretty old, so I don’t think it has any.

Nico: Perfect! I brought these as a last resort. Honoka, take these to the living room and use them for extra light.

Honoka: Aye aye, captain! Wait, are these what I think they are?

Story 4

Nico: Looks like we’ve got plenty of meat and vegetables, so I’ll chop these up. Kotori, how’re you doing?

Kotori: Okay. I’ve never cooked rice in a pot before, so I’m a little unsure. Let’s see. Ooh! Somehow, it came out perfect!

Nico: Cooking rice is all about maintaining the heat once the water starts boiling. If you give it just the right amount of time, you’ll get perfectly tasty rice.

Kotori: Gotcha! Wow, this has been really educational!

Nico: Once the rice is done, we’ll use that burner for the pot. Honoka, how’re things in the living room?

Honoka: A-Okay! I’ve got the candles put up all around the room, and it’s a lot brighter now!

Eli: We flipped some dishes upside-down, so the melted wax holds the candles in place. It may be an improved solution, but now we’ve got plenty of candlelight.

Nozomi: I’m still amazed that you went so far as to bring candles. Nico, you were so prepared, it’s scary.

Nico: It’s no big deal. To me, it’s like lucky charms.

Kotori: Charms?

Rin: *Giggle* How pretty! Seeing things lit up by candlelight makes me feel like I’m in a dream.

Hanayo: Me too. It’s as if the room came straight out of a fairy tale.

Nico: That’s sweet, but keep some water near them so we don’t start a fire. Also, try to make sure there’s nothing flammable next to them.

Nozomi: Of course! We were extra careful.

Nico: Good. Time for us to wrap up our part, then! I’ll bring the pot. Kotori, you bring the camping stove into the living room.

Kotori: Will do. Be careful! …There we go.

Honoka: Whoa, this looks delicious! The scent of it’s making my tummy rumble.

Nico: It’s a pretty basic hot pot meal, boiled with miso and dash soup stock. I made it a little thicker so it’ll warm us up!

Rin: Yay! I was starting to get cold, so a hot meal is just what we need!

Honoka: Let’s eat! *Chomp* Mm-mmm! Delicious! This is the best hot pot ever!

Hanayo: The rice was cooked perfectly, too! It’s just a bit crispy, which goes perfectly with the hot pot!

Umi: Without any extra seasoning, the natural sweetened and richness of the vegetables slowly comes out as you eat them.

Eli: It’s so nice to just sit here with everyone around the hot pot, sharing the meal. I could eat like this all the time!

Nico: We’ve got plenty, so don’t be shy! Help yourself to seconds if you like. Hmm?

Maki: *Sniff*

Nico: What’re you doing back here, Maki? Come on over and eat with the rest of us.

Maki: Nico, I’m so, so sorry. If I’d just checked the water valve when we got here, none of this would’ve happened.

Nico: It’s not your fault we had bad weather. And if you hadn’t gotten this cottage for us, we wouldn’t be on this trip in the first place!

Nico: I’m sure they’ll have the power back on before you know it. Little troubles like this are part of the group trip experience!

Rin: Yeah, yeah! I bet other school idol groups have gone through trials like this, and come out better because of it!

Eli: I doubt many go through something quite like this, but thanks to Nico, a slew of unexpected problems became a bunch of wonderful memories! Thank you, Nico.

Maki: Yes, thank you, Nico. I think when all this is over I’ll be able to write a fantastic song!

Kotori: Yes! And I think this trip is going to result in some really special costumes. When we get back, I’m going to roll up my sleeves and get to work!

Honoka: Thank you, Nico! Also, seconds, please!

Nico: Yes, yes, coming right up! Geez, you all can be so overdramatic.

Story 5

Nico: Well, we all had a good dinner. I wonder if the weather will clear up by morning.

Kotori: I hope so. It looks like you brought enough water for us to wash the dishes.

Nico: I just wish the power would come back on. Even with lots of blankets and futon bedding, it’s going to be cold without any electric heaters.

Kotori: Is the kerosene heater not going to be enough?

Nico: It’s better than nothing, but I’d be too afraid of it starting a fire to leave it going all night.

Kotori: I see. Well, regardless, thanks for everything, Nico. Also, I owe you an apology. I shouldn’t have said that you were worrying too much.

Nico: Don’t worry about it. I wish I had just been worrying too much! But in the end, I’m glad all the supplies I brought were able to help some.

Kotori: Some?! You saved our lives! I have to ask, how’d you know how to handle all this stuff?

Nico: All this stuff? Like what to do in a power outage? All right.

Nico: If I had to say, it’s because something similar happened during my brother’s birthday party once.

Kotori: Something similar?

Nico: It was a stormy day that day, too. A massive lightning strike knocked out the power to our house.

Nico: It was pitch black, and my brother and sisters were scared and crying.

Nico: We just happened to have a bunch of candles on hand, and they really saved the day. Once we lit them and the room brightened up, everyone stopped crying.

Nico: I even got them excited again by saying we were having a special candlelight party! Fortunately, they all loved the idea, so everything was fine in the end.

Kotori: I had no idea.

Nico: We got through it thanks to the candles, but if we hadn’t had any, it would’ve turned into a really sad birthday for him.

Nico: That’s when I learned that even though you can’t beat nature, you can be prepared enough to not let nature beat you.

Nico: It’s like being a school idol, right? In order to give the audience a fun experience, we have to do lots of practice and preparation beforehand!

Nico: So really, this is the same thing. When we run into trouble, nothing is more valuable than experience and preparation.

Nico: So even if people laugh or roll their eyes, I make sure I’m prepared well enough to make everyone happy, no matter what. That’s what a school idol does.

Kotori: Y-You are SO COOL.

Nico: Well, duh! J-Just keep this between us, okay? Stuff like this is only cool because it’s not public knowledge, understand?

Eli: Is that so? Then it’s too bad that once you hear something, you can’t un-hear it.

Nico: What the?!

Nozomi: Your attitude about being a school idol never ceases to amaze, Nico. I’m not being sarcastic, by the way. I really mean it!

Umi: We need to redouble our efforts, Honoka.

Honoka: I’ll say! We all need to follow Nico’s example and work even harder to make everyone happy!

Nico: S-Stop saying all this embarrassing stuff! I was just giving an example, it’s no big deal. Huh?

Maki: The lights are on? The power’s back!

Kotori: Thank goodness. I’m so… Oh!

Hanayo: What is it, Kotori?

Kotori: Sorry Hanayo, give me one minute! The most spectacular idea for a costume just popped into my head. I need to sketch this out before I forget it! Be right back!

Rin: Huh? Kotori? She’s gone…

Nozomi: *Snicker* Looks like the trip was worth the effort for Kotori.

Epilogue

Honoka: Whew. What a relief! The blizzard must’ve passed during the night. It’s a nice, calm morning!

Maki: I went and opened up the main water valve, too. Now we’ll be able to make breakfast without any trouble.

Kotori: All right! I’m going to make an extra-special breakfast to make up for not getting to make dinner the way I wanted last night!

Nico: I appreciate the enthusiasm, but don’t make anything too heavy. I prefer a light breakfast!

Honoka: Today, I’m going snowboarding no matter what! You have to come with me, okay Umi?

Umi: If I had to pick, I’d prefer to go skiing. Hey, wait a minute! Honoka, for goodness sake, please remember why we’re on this trip in the first place!

Honoka: Aww, come on. Just a little! We were snowed in all day yesterday, so we need to get out and move our bodies to make up for it!

Eli: *Chuckle* Actually, I agree. I vote for everyone being free to go do their own thing until lunch, at least.

Umi: Even you, Eli?

Nozomi: Oh, come on, Umi. Deep down, even you must want to get out there and enjoy the snowy mountains in your own way, right?

Umi: W-Well, yes, I can’t deny that. I’m sorry.

Nozomi: Aww, I love it when you’re open and honest, Umi! As a reward for your honesty, how about a little bear hug?

Umi: W-What kind of reward is that?! That’s more of a punishment than anything. Ack!

Hanayo: Hey, Rin. Look at how high the snow’s piled up over there. Let’s go make a snowman!

Rin: Sounds good! And afterwards, we should split into two teams and have a snowball fight!

Nico: Those two never learn, do they? And after we had such a rough day, too.

Kotori: *Laugh* Yesterday definitely caught us off-guard, and even made me nervous at times, but in the end, I’m really glad we came here.

Kotori: I mean, I have a whole newfound respect for you, Nico! You were like a superhero yesterday. That was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Right, everyone?

Honoka: Totally! Thanks a million, Nico!

Umi: I learned a lot. I’m grateful for everything you taught us.

Rin: Nico, you were super-duper cool yesterday!

Nico: Uhh, h-hmph! I see you’ve all finally woken up and realized my greatness. I expect you all to learn from my example and strive for excellence at all times!

Nico: To that end, I don’t mind if you all play in the snow, but don’t forget to practice. I’ll be in my room doing solo training for the live show all day today. Later!

Kotori: Wait! There she goes.

Nozomi: *Chuckle* Nico’s terrible at hiding her embarrassment. She talks a big game, but her face was beet red and she looked overjoyed.

Eli: Indeed. But it’s true that we’ve been totally reliant on her this whole trip. We need to find a way to repay her.

Maki: Yes, we’re truly fortunate that Nico was with us yesterday. Thanks to her, I even managed to write a wonderful new song!

Eli: Then I guess it’s our turn now. The two of us should put our heads together and start thinking now.

Honoka: Hmm? What’re you talking about?

Eli: *Chuckle* Just planning a bit of fun. You’ll all find out what it is when the time comes!

Honoka: Aww, no fair!
