Story[]

Prologue

Honoka: *Sigh* It’s so hot.

Hanayo: This really feels like the height of summer. I’m happy that the typhoon finally last night, and we can practice outside again, but…

Rin: When the sun’s shining this intensely, the rooftop feels like a sauna.

Eli: Come on, there’s no time to be tired. There aren’t many days left until our next live show, so we have to throw ourselves into practice.

Nico: We know, we know. That’s what next week’s training camp is for.

Honoka: Yup, yup! I can’t wait to go on a trip with all of you and have a big sleepover!

Umi: Honoka, you do realize we aren’t going there for fun, right? You can’t treat this like a vacation.

Nozomi: Now, now, I don’t think it’ll hurt to let our hair down a bit and freshen up in a new environment.

Umi: Maybe, but even so…

Honoka: I can’t wait for our summer training camp! Maki’s dad is letting us use their vacation home, right?

Umi: That’s right. So while we’re there, I beg you to be careful not to make a mess or break anything.

Honoka: *Laugh* It’ll be fine! Right, Maki? Wait, huh? Where did Maki go?

Hanayo: She got a text from her dad earlier and stepped out into the hallway to call him.

Rin: She seemed kinda flustered. Oh, she’s back. Hey, Maki!

Maki: Sorry to keep you waiting. Umm, I need to talk about something really important. Is now a good time?

Eli: Yes, go ahead. We’re still on our break anyway. What happened, Maki?

Kotori: You don’t look very happy. Is everything okay? Do you feel sick?

Maki: No, I feel completely fine, but…

Maki: I’m sorry! We can’t use my vacation home for the training camp anymore!

Rin: Wha…

Together: Whaaaaaaaaaat?!

Umi: I see. So your vacation home that we were planning to stay at was damaged by last night’s typhoon.

Kotori: The wind and rain were really strong, weren’t they?

Maki: Yeah. The damage isn’t so bad that we have to completely rebuild it, but the repairs still might take around a month.

Maki: My dad’s asking around to see if there’s any other place we could borrow, but it doesn’t seem likely on such short notice.

Maki: I’ve let you down. I’m really sorry about this.

Umi: You couldn’t do anything about that. This isn’t good, thought. Where else could we stay?

Nozomi: We should look for someplace inexpensive.

Eli: Even if we fine somewhere affordable for one person, the costs will add up for all nine of us. We barely have enough for our club dues as is. This seems tough.

Rin: Oh, how about a camping trip then? We could pitch a tent and make our own meals. It’d be practically free!

Nico: But if it rains, we won’t be able to practice at all. Not to mention, most campsites these days charge a fee.

Nozomi: I see. As much as I’d love for us to have this opportunity to bond, it’s not looking possible.

Honoka: Hmm, I wonder if there’s any other way. Oh, that reminds me!

Umi: Did you come up with a good idea, Honoka?

Honoka: Yeah! I remembered my mom telling me about how one of our regulars owns a rental complex out on the beach.

Honoka: We go way back, so they might be willing to hear our unreasonable request. What do you think?

Nico: A complex on the beach? It’s probably completely booked now that we’re in summer. There’s no way any rooms are still available.

Nozomi: I guess it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Would you mind, Honoka?

Honoka: Not at all! I’ll go talk to my mom right away!

Umi: *Sigh*

Maki: Hmm? What’s wrong? You look really worried, Umi.

Umi: Oh, it’s just, whenever Honoka gets really excited about something like this, things end badly.

Maki: Umm, well, I know what you mean, but I’m in no position to day anything right now.

Umi: Oh, I-I’m sorry. It’s not your fault, Maki, so please don’t worry about it.

Eli: Let’s try leaving it to her for now. We can always thing of a new plan if it doesn’t work out. Okay?

Umi: If you say so, Eli. I’m still worried though.

Story 1

Rin: Mmm, we finally made it! I can already smell the sea breeze from all the way back here.

Hanayo: I’m glad the weather’s so nice now. And the views from the train as we rode along the coast were incredible.

Nico: Honestly though. I can’t believe this complex had an opening, Honoka. I was expecting a no, so I couldn’t believe my ears when you told us they said okay.

Kotori: This must be your good karma coming back around, Honoka. You’re amazing.

Honoka: *Giggle* Praise me more, praise me more!

Umi: You shouldn’t get carried away though. Geez.

Eli: But this is surprisingly… Well, maybe that sounds rude. This area by the station is pretty developed. Look, there’s even a large supermarket there.

Maki: Yes, there’s also a hospital and other medical establishments nearby, so it’s a convenient place to live.

Umi: Oh? Have you been here before, Maki?

Maki: On a family vacation when I was little. There’s a huge beach resort near here with an aquarium attached.

Maki: Also, there’s a beach just a short walk away from here, where you can collect shells that wash up on the shore, and pretty rocks from the cliff wall.

Rin: Shells? I wanna bring some back as souvenirs!

Nozomi: Let’s all go there together if we have time. Maki, would you mind being our tour guide?

Maki: I mean, it’s not really the sort of place you could get lost. But sure, I can be your guide.

Maki: I also remember my dad buying me toys at that large supermarket, and eating dinner at a fish market nearby… Yeah, it was a really fun trip.

Umi: Those sound like wonderful memories. I can easily picture a child version of you running around here.

Maki: W-Well, that’s all in the past.

Maki: Anyway, is this really okay, Honoka? This area’s pretty popular, so it’s usually hard to book a place.

Honoka: Of course! No need to worry! Just leave everything to me!

Umi: I don’t get it. Where does all of that unwarranted confidence come from?

Honoka: Well? This is the training camp that our Homura Bakery regular arranged for us!

Hanayo: Wh-Whoa!

Eli: It looks quite broken in. It’s charming, though. I like it.

Rin: This place is huge! It’s like a hotel.

Umi: Honoka, I’m sorry to keep asking, but is this REALLY okay?

Maki: Seriously. It seems too good to be true that we can stay somewhere this grand for free.

Honoka: *Laugh* You two are such worrywarts. Have I ever suggested anything with this much confidence and been wrong?

Kotori: Hmm, even off the top of my head, I can think of several examples.

Honoka: Oh, really? Well, anyway, let’s go to our room.

Rin: All right! I’ll lead the way then!

Umi: *Sigh* Maybe I am worrying too much.

Maki: I think you should trust your gut. I’m feeling more and more anxious myself.

Hanayo: I-I think it’ll be okay. Probably…

Story 2

Honoka: Okay, listen up, everyone! This is the room we’ll be staying in. It’s huge!

Nico: Wow, what a great place. It’s a little cramped for nine people, but if we line up our futons side by side, it’ll be just fine.

Rin: Oh, Hanayo! We can see the ocean from this window.

Hanayo: You’re right. It’s so pretty.

Eli: This is amazing. I can’t believe we’re allowed to stay in a room this wonderful. We owe a huge thanks to that regular of yours, Honoka!

Nozomi: And to Honoka as well, for setting this all up for us.

Nico: That being said, I think Maki and Umi were right to worry. It’s suspicious that a room this nice is open during this season. There might be some sort of catch.

Kotori: What kind of catch?

Nico: I don’t know. Maybe this room is haunted or something.

Hanayo: Eeeep! I-It is?

Rin: D-Don’t worry, Hanayo! If any monsters pop out, just pretend to be dead and they won’t attack you!

Maki: That’s what they tell you to do when you see a bear, not a monster. What would playing dead in from of a ghost accomplish?

Honoka: Come one, this room isn’t haunted! Although I think there might be a scary legend about this area.

Kotori: Really?!

Honoka: B-But I heard that story is set in a place far, far away from here. So there’s no need to worry… Huh?

Maki: Someone’s calling? I wonder who it could be. Hello?

Maki: Yes, I understand. I’ll let her know. Thank you.

Maki: Honoka, that was the landlord. They want to see you down in the lobby.

Honoka: Me? I wonder why.

Maki: I’m not sure. I didn’t ask. It sounded like they needed to talk to you about something.

Honoka: Okay, got it. Let me go see what it’s about. I’ll be right back.

Nico: Maybe they want to warn us about ghosts after all.

Hanayo: N-No way.

Umi: Well, that aside. Since we’re calling this a training camp, we need to begin seriously training from today.

Umi: That’s why I came up with this special training camp regimen for us. Please take a look, everyone!

Nico: Wait, what’s with this Spartan-like regimen? We’re not aiming to be professional athletes, you know?

Rin: Running through the sand, weight lifting, dance lessons… *Gasp* Ocean! Where’s the ocean?!

Umi: I’m right here. What’s wrong?

Rin: No! I know your name means ocean, but I’m not talking about you!

Maki: This all feels very familiar.

Eli: Okay, okay. As soon as Honoka returns, we’ll discuss our plans for today.

Maki: Good idea. I wonder what the landlord is talking to Honoka about.

Umi: I’m going to go check on them. Huh?

Honoka: I’m back, you guys.

Umi: Wh-What’s wrong, Honoka? Your face is so pale!

Honoka: Umm, I have some bad news. And we need to have a serious talk.

Umi: Bad news?

Maki: Serious talk?

Story 3

Hanayo: Huh? We have to work at this beach hut?

Umi: Honoka, what’s the meaning of this?

Honoka: I-I’m sorry! I meant to ask if we could stay here for our training camp.

Honoka: But the landlord somehow misunderstood and thought we were applying for a summer part-time job. That’s why…

Nico: Wait, those two things are nothing alike! How could this have happened?!

Umi: It must have been a simple miscommunication. This is what I was afraid of.

Nozomi: Umi’s bad premonition came true. Even my tarot cards couldn’t foresee this turn of events.

Umi: Well, I’m not exactly happy about being right.

Kotori: Anyway, it seems rude to back out now.

Honoka: Oof, I’m sorry, everyone.

Eli: *Sigh* It can’t be helped now. We’ll just have to suck it up and work hard!

Nico: That’s right. As school idols, it’d be disgraceful for us to abandon a task we’ve been assigned, no matter how it happened. It’s time to get fired up!

Rin: Yeah! I’m gonna give it my all!

Eli: I guess we should begin by splitting up the duties, like cooking and customer service and so on. What do you think of deciding our roles by lottery?

Nozomi: Okay, I’ll set everything up. Wait just one sec.

Nozomi: *Giggle* You might not like what you draw, but no hard feelings, okay?

Hanayo: Nozomi… I think you’re enjoying this way too much.

Eli: With that, Umi and Maki will be in charge of cooking, Kotori and Nico will be in charge of drinks and shaved ice.

Eli: Nozomi and I will handle the customers, along with Rin and Hanayo.

Maki: Wait a minute! Nico should be cooking, she’s a way better cook than me!

Nozomi: Hmm, but that was the luck of the draw, so try to make it work, okay?

Maki: What if I mess up? This food is for our customers. I can’t just serve them anything.

Nico: It’ll be fine, Maki! Anything you’d cook at a beach hut like this only requires cutting and grilling.

Maki: That’s not the point.

Umi: well, I feel like I’ll have an easier time working hard behind the scenes than having to interact with the customers.

Kotori: You still have to keep smiling, though. Even if you’re not facing the customers, it’s important to have that mindset.

Umi: I-I know that! I’ll make sure I have nothing but positive thoughts while I work.

Eli: You say that, Umi, but your expression looks really stiff. Try to relax a little.

Umi: L-Like this?

Nozomi: That’s right! Whether it’s a live show or a beach hut, the most important thing is to make our visitors happy. So let’s try our best, okay?

Together: Yeah!

Maki, Umi: Y-Yeah.

Umi: This just keeps getting worse and worse.

Eli: Before we stock up on food and drinks, let’s get the beach hut ready. Oh, it’s a mess in here.

Rin: It’s falling apart. Everything’s covered in rust, too.

Kotori: There are even holes in the walls. It looks kind of sketchy.

Nico: Hey, wait! The refrigerator is broken! The power’s on, but it isn’t the least bit cold.

Hanayo: The drink cooler isn’t working either. We won’t be able to keep the drinks chilled.

Nozomi: In this weather and heat, we really need to keep the meat and vegetables refrigerated, or they’ll spoil quickly.

Umi: This is bad. There’s no time to get it repaired before we have to open. What should we do?

Maki: Hmm….

Story 4

Maki: Umm, you guys. This beach hut has a shaved ice maker, and I mentioned that there’s a fish marker nearby earlier, right?

Eli: Y-Yes. What does that have to do with anything?

Maki: That means there’s a good chance that there’s a shop that sells ice around here, right?

Nozomi: Yeah, we can probably find one if we search online. Did you come up with an idea, Maki?

Maki: We can keep our food and drinks cool with ice. And if we order a large amount to also make shaved ice with, they should deliver it here for us.

Hanayo: But we don’t have any sort of container to put the ice and food and drinks in.

Maki: We can get one. That large supermarket has a store inside that sells toys.

Maki: If they’re still selling the same toys I remember them selling, they should have a certain something that turns into a large container that holds lots of water.

Kotori: A large container?

Eli: Oh, I get it! A children’s inflatable pool! We can put the drinks and ice in that to keep them cool. Harasho!

Kotori: If we seal up all the food in plastic bags, we can use it just like a refrigerator.

Umi: Also… Oh, I just searched on my phone, and it looks like there’s also a hundred yen store inside the supermarket.

Kotori: You’re right. They probably have supplies like wallpaper, too! If we add some decorations, that should help with the run-down…

Kotori: I mean, the vintage appearance of this place.

Maki: Yeah, that’s a great idea. It’s quick by bike, so let’s borrow some from the rental complex and go shopping.

Nico: Got it! I’ll come along then.

Umi: Okay, while they do that, the rest of us can clean the inside of the hut.

Kotori: Yeah. Oh, but with this amount of rust, it’s going to take a really long time.

Umi: It’ll be no problem at all. Kotori, can you look through the seasonings and bring me the salt and vinegar?

Kotori: Salt and vinegar? Okay, got it. Wait just one sec!

Kotori: I brought them over. What are you planning to do with these, Umi?

Umi: Let me see. If we use these and scrub with this scouring brush…

Kotori: Wow, all the rusted parts are turning shiny again!

Umi: This is the best way to remove rust caused by salty air. It’s especially effective on brass.

Kotori: Amazing! That’s the kind of life hack grandmas usually know.

Umi: Umm, is that a compliment?

Umi: Anyway, we shouldn’t need too much elbow grease if we use this method. Let’s split up the areas that need to be cleaned and start scrubbing.

Rin: Yeah! Let’s work hard, Hanayo!

Hanayo: Okay, Rin!

Eli: We’ll wipe the tables and chairs then. And after that…

Honoka: Hey, wait!

Umi: Hmm? What’s wrong, Honoka?

Honoka: You know what’s wrong! Everyone split up the tasks, but the paper I drew just says “Assistant.”

Eli: Oh. Then it looks like Nozomi did a good job arranging the papers so that you’d draw the right one.

Nozomi: *Snicker* Just like I had hoped. All right then, I’ll go right ahead and ask you to assist us with something.

Honoka: Umm, Eli, Nozomi? I’m really scared to hear what you’re about to ask.

Eli: Don’t worry, it’s a very important job. Nozomi, did you finish that thing I asked you to make?

Nozomi: Yes, all done! Here you go, Honoka. Take this and go walk around the beach.

Honoka: Is this… a sign? “The Beach Hut, Highly Anticipated Grand Opening Today”? What is this?!

Eli: An ad, of course. It’s hard for a place like this to get customers if we don’t walk around and grab people’s attention.

Nozomi: Exactly. So please make sure to thoroughly promote this beach hut that we only have the pleasure of working at thanks to your referral.

Honoka: Umm… Are the two of you, by any chance… angry?

Nozomi: *Giggle* Of course not. But if all of our efforts end up going to waste, then maybe…

Honoka: Eeeek! I-I’ll try my best to bring in lots of customers! See you later!

Kotori: I feel kind of bad for her.

Umi: This is her punishment for getting so carried away. All right, we don’t have much time, so let’s get everything in order quickly!

Kotori: Sure thing. But at this rate, I don’t know when we’ll ever have time to practice.

Eli: Oh, I forgot to tell everyone. We’re going to start practice in the evening.

Eli: It should feel a lot cooler by then. And the number of customers should die down.

Hanayo: Wh-Whaaaat?! W-Won’t that be too tiring?

Nozomi: And of course, we’ll also wake up super early to practice.

Rin: Monsters! I’m with monsters scarier than any ghost!

Story 5

Umi: Okay, we can check running off of our training regimen now. All that’s left is… Huh?

Honoka: *Moan*

Hanayo: I-I can’t do this anymore.

Nico: P-Practicing right after work without a break… is too much.

Kotori: There was an endless line of customers all day, too. We barely had any time to rest.

Rin: C-Can we take a short break?

Umi: I suppose we have no choice. What do you think, Eli?

Eli: Well, we’ve had an eventful day, so I guess we can wrap things up early.

Nozomi: Good work, everyone.

Rin: Y-Yaaaay! I made it out alive somehow.

Umi: Don’t be so dramatic. Oh, is something wrong, Maki?

Maki: Huh? What do you mean?

Umi: You were looking out at the ocean lost in thought.

Maki: It’s nothing. I was just remembering when I came here as a kid.

Umi: I see. The ocean is so beautiful. I feel like it’s cleansing my soul.

Maki: Yeah. Swimming and playing is fun too, but I really enjoy relaxing on the beach like this and staring out into the distance.

Umi: I know how you feel. Oh, by the way, I forgot to thank you.

Maki: Thank me?

Umi: Yes, thank you very much, Maki. We wouldn’t have made any progress today without your ideas.

Maki: It’s okay. That was nothing. I just happened to be familiar with this area.

Maki: That pool fridge idea was something I saw at the beach before, too. I remembered a group of students doing that to keep their drinks cold.

Umi: Either way, it really helped us out. Also…

Maki: Also?

Umi: Please don’t take this the wrong way. I feel like the old Maki wouldn’t have gone out of her way to try to help this much.

Umi: However, during this trip, you’ve been very proactive about offering your help. It makes me so happy to see.

Maki: Well, this all happened because I messed up in the first place. I wanted to make up for that a little.

Umi: You don’t have to worry about that. We were the ones making an unreasonable request.

Maki: Since it was my responsibility, I should’ve completely followed through. That’s how it is when you’re part of a team, right?

Umi: *Chuckle* You’ve really changed, Maki.

Maki: I really have, haven’t I? When I first joined µ's, I didn’t want to burden myself any more than I had to. I thought group activities were a huge pain.

Umi: I know what you mean. When you’re part of a group, you may have to do things you don’t want to do or that you’re bad at. Otherwise, you inconvenience everyone.

Maki: Like when we were on cooking duty earlier, I was worried the whole time about whether or not the food would turn out okay.

Umi: But you were actually quite skilled. You made our meals too, and everyone thought the food was delicious. Did you dislike having to do it?

Maki: No, it wasn’t a bad feeling. It’s fun when something you can do helps everyone out.

Umi: I understand. You know, I’m almost grateful for Honoka’s slip-up because it means I was able to see your kind side… Ow!

Maki: What?! Was that… a beach ball?

Honoka: Umi, Maki! Come play with us a little!

Umi: Honoka! If you have that much energy left, let’s keep practicing!

Maki: It’s okay, Umi. Things that seem like a pain are still worth doing sometimes, right?

Umi: Maki…

Umi: *Chuckle* You’re right. Let’s go crush them then!

Maki: Huh? I don’t think we’re playing dodgeball or anything. Well, I guess it’s fine.

Epilogue

Kotori: All in all, that training camp was like a whirlwind.

Honoka: It was a super fun summer training camp in the end! Let’s do our best at our next live show, everyone!

Nico: Don’t try to wrap things up so neatly! We spent almost the entire trip working at the beach hut!

Rin: Yeah, you nodded off as soon as you were done eating, huh Hanayo?

Hanayo: Th-The food was good, so I couldn’t help it. You were falling asleep too, Rin.

Nico: The dinners really were delicious. Maybe it’s because it was after a long day of work, but I felt like I was completely absorbed in eating.

Nozomi: I never knew how wonderful the taste and texture of fresh sashimi was. The beef hot pot was really good, too.

Rin: Also, just like Maki said, we found so many pretty shells on the beach! As soon as we get back, I’m gonna make accessories with them.

Kotori: I know! Why don’t we make some brooches with the shells for the focal point of our next costumes?

Maki: That’s a great idea. The ocean was the inspiration for our next song, too.

Eli: Then let’s create some beautiful jewelry together. It’ll help us commemorate our training camp trip as well.

Umi: For a training camp trip though, we didn’t do very much training. I’m sad we couldn’t follow the strengthening regimen I came up with.

Honoka: H-Ha, ha, ha. I’m sorry. I’ll reflect on my actions.

Umi: We had a valuable experience, so I’ll stop blaming you, but I do hope you’re prepared. You played hard, so when we get back, it’s time to work extra hard.

Honoka: Ugh, I-I’ll try my best.

Eli: Now, now. Honoka worked very hard to make up for what she did, didn’t she?

Eli: I have some doubts about whether we were able to get enough practice in. But it was certainly a good bonding experience.

Honoka: R-Right? Right? Yeah! I’m glad I was able to help in the end.

Nozomi: Yup, yup. That’s why I’ll let you off the hook easy this time with a super special tickle attack!

Honoka: Huh? Wait, whaaaat?! Umi! Kotori! Help me!

Kotori: Sorry, Honoka. I don’t think I can protect you this time.

Honoka: Don’t say that! I worked hard promoting the store remember? I brought in lots of customers, remember?!

Nico: Yeah, the store was really bustling because of your hard work. Thank you for all of the unforgettably fun summer memories, Honoka.

Hanayo: Nico, your face… Your face doesn’t look like you mean that at all.

Umi: *Huff* Geez.

Maki: It’s true that I had the chance to return somewhere from my childhood and experience many interesting things.

Maki: But from now on, I’ll be in charge of planning our lodging so that nothing like this ever happens again.

Umi: We’ll be counting on you, Maki.
